Sometimes. Whether you can run BIOS Flashback with the CPU installed depends on the exact motherboard model and its instructions. Some boards support flashing without a CPU; others tell you to install one, and at least one cited manual specifies that the CPU must be removed. “No CPU required” means the update can be done without a CPU—it does not automatically mean an installed CPU must be removed.
What to check before starting
- Identify the exact board. Check the model name and revision printed on the motherboard or in its documentation. Confirm in its official specifications or manual that it supports a button-based feature such as USB BIOS FlashBack, Flash BIOS Button, BIOS Flashback, or Q-Flash Plus. A button alone is not proof that the feature is supported; MSI, for example, limits its Flash BIOS Button instructions to supported models.
- Open that model’s official BIOS page and manual. Find the procedure for the button-based feature, not a standard in-BIOS update. Follow the manual’s CPU, memory, graphics card, power, USB, file-name, and completion-signal requirements.
- Use only the BIOS file for that exact model. Extract and rename it exactly as the manufacturer directs. Do not borrow a file name or procedure from a similar board.
The board-specific details matter. For example, ASUS specifies a USB drive of at least 1 GB formatted FAT16 or FAT32 with an MBR partition; MSI’s guide specifies FAT32; and the ASRock B850M Pro Plus WiFi manual specifies a USB 2.0 drive up to 32 GB, formatted FAT16 or FAT32. These are different model instructions, not universal requirements.
How CPU requirements differ by motherboard
| Board or feature instructions | What they establish about the CPU | Other model-specific details |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack | The cited support article does not say an installed CPU must be removed. Its silence does not establish a CPU requirement either way. | Use the model’s FlashBack USB port and BIOS file. ASUS says to shut down while leaving power connected. |
| MSI Flash BIOS Button | MSI describes updating “without a CPU and RAM,” but that does not directly say whether an already-installed CPU may stay in place. | For supported models, the guide calls for renaming the extracted file to MSI.ROM, using the rear BIOS-marked USB port, and connecting CPU and 24-pin power cables. |
| ASRock BIOS Flashback feature page | ASRock says, “No CPU required,” for the procedure it describes. Verify that the instructions apply to your board. | The page specifies FAT32, the file name creative.rom, the designated port, 24-pin power, and pressing the button for about three seconds. |
| GIGABYTE B760M POWER Q-Flash Plus | The board’s page says the procedure can run without a CPU, memory, or graphics card. | It specifies the file name gigabyte.bin, 24-pin and 8-pin power, and the Q-Flash USB port. |
| ASRock B850M Pro Plus WiFi manual | The manual instructs users to install the CPU, CPU fan, and DRAM before using Flashback. | It specifies a USB 2.0 drive up to 32 GB, FAT16 or FAT32, and the files BIOSUBU.BIN and PSPBIOS.IMG in the root directory. |
| GIGABYTE X570 features manual | The manual says Q-Flash Plus updates the main BIOS only if run without the CPU installed. | This instruction is for the cited X570 manual; it should not be assumed to apply to other GIGABYTE boards. |
The examples are not interchangeable. For a clear answer on your CPU, look for an explicit instruction for your motherboard revision. If the manual says to remove or install the CPU, follow it. If it only says a CPU is not required, that confirms you can flash without one but does not, by itself, settle whether an installed CPU may remain.
Run the update using the board’s own procedure
- Download the BIOS package from the official support page for your exact motherboard model and revision.
- Extract the package and apply the specified file name. For example, the cited MSI guide uses
MSI.ROM, the GIGABYTE B760M POWER page usesgigabyte.bin, and ASRock’s feature page usescreative.rom. Do not substitute one name for another. - Format and prepare the USB drive as directed, then put the required file or files in the location specified by the manual. Use the designated BIOS or Flashback USB port.
- Connect the required power cables and leave the system in the state the instructions specify. Component requirements and power connections vary by board, so do not assume that every procedure uses the same setup.
- Press the Flashback button as directed, then wait for the board’s completion signal. Do not remove the USB drive or interrupt power while the status light indicates activity.
How to avoid a failed flash
- Do not use a BIOS for a similar-looking board. Match the download to the exact motherboard model and revision.
- Do not generalize setup details. File names, USB formats and capacities, installed components, power connections, and button procedures differ among models.
- Do not interrupt the update. ASUS warns that removing the USB drive, disconnecting the power supply, turning on the system, or pressing CLR_CMOS during the update can interrupt it and leave the system unable to boot. MSI also warns against powering off during a refresh.
- Check for narrow firmware prerequisites. ASUS notes a management-engine firmware prerequisite for specified 400-series boards used with an Intel 11th-generation CPU, and separately says Intel 800-series users need an ME firmware update after FlashBack. These notes apply to those stated cases, not every board.
Confirm the update completed
Use the board’s own completion signal and verification steps. ASUS says its FlashBack LED goes out when the update is complete and advises entering BIOS after boot to compare the displayed version with the target version. MSI says its indicator going off signals a successful refresh. Follow the corresponding manual if the light behaves differently or the system does not start as expected.
