Rather than inventing a first-person story, here is the decision readers can make from the verifiable product context: GitKraken offers a broad visual Git workflow, while a custom client is only a sensible alternative when it solves a clearly defined need and its ongoing upkeep is worth taking on.
What GitKraken offers
GitKraken describes Desktop as a visual Git client for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with commit-history visualization, merge-conflict tools, provider integrations, an integrated terminal, and agent-session capabilities. Those are vendor-described features, not independent test results. See GitKraken Desktop’s product page.
GitKraken says its products integrate with GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Azure DevOps, and span desktop, command line, IDE, web, and mobile offerings. The company’s overview does not establish that every product or plan provides the same depth of integration; check the specific workflow you rely on at GitKraken’s product and company overview.
How to decide whether to switch
Start with the task that is not working for you, rather than with the idea of replacing a client. A useful comparison is based on your actual repository habits:

#1 Best Overall
- History and everyday Git operations: Identify which branch, commit, staging, and review actions you perform repeatedly. A custom tool needs to make those actions clearer or better suited to your workflow to justify its existence.
- Diffs and conflicts: Decide whether you need visual diff review or merge-conflict assistance. GitKraken lists conflict tools among its Desktop features; do not assume a small custom interface will replace them without implementing and validating comparable behavior.
- Hosting integrations: List the providers and related tasks you use. A client that can invoke Git locally is not automatically a substitute for provider-specific features.
- Platforms: Check that the client runs on every operating system you use. GitKraken states that Desktop supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; a home-built client’s compatibility depends on its implementation.
- Plan access: Match the features you need to the applicable GitKraken plan and its terms. The pricing page lists Community, Pro, Advanced, Business, and Enterprise offerings, but feature access and terms should be checked directly at GitKraken’s pricing page. The available evidence does not establish that cost caused the author’s decision.
- Build and upkeep: Count the implementation work and the continuing responsibility for bugs, compatibility, and features you might later need. No author-specific build time or maintenance record is established here, so a claim that a custom client is cheaper, faster, or simpler would be unsupported.
What a custom Git client must make clear
Before replacing an established client, define the boundary of the tool. Which actions does it implement itself, which does it pass to Git, and which does it delegate to other software? Record how it handles repository state, errors, credentials, remote operations, and conflicts. Without that account, readers cannot tell whether the project is a focused interface around existing Git commands or a broader implementation with a larger maintenance burden.
For a personal account to be useful, it should name the concrete friction that triggered the change, show the old and new workflows, identify the custom client’s actual scope and technology choices, and report compatibility, integrations, build effort, maintenance, and limitations. None of those author-specific details is established by the available sources, so they should not be guessed.

When to keep a client, use the command line, or build
- Keep using GitKraken if its visual history, conflict tools, platform support, or provider connections match the work you do and are available under terms suitable for your use. GitKraken describes these capabilities at its Desktop page; confirm the current plan details at its pricing page.
- Use Git directly or another client if your core need is a small set of Git operations and you do not need the visual or provider-specific workflow you currently have. Evaluate alternatives against the same repository tasks rather than assuming that a different interface will solve the underlying friction.
- Build a custom client if you can state the unmet need precisely, keep the scope narrow, and accept responsibility for testing and maintenance. Treat it as a tool for a particular workflow, not as proof that one approach is universally superior.
GitKraken’s download page listed version 12.5.0 when it was crawled, but release information changes; consult the current download page if the installed version matters.
