What Is Microsoft Desktop Virtualization?

Microsoft desktop virtualization can mean a local virtual machine or, commonly today, Azure Virtual Desktop for remotely delivering Windows desktops and apps. Learn how AVD works and how it differs from Windows 365.

Microsoft desktop virtualization means delivering a Windows desktop or selected Windows applications from a virtualized environment rather than relying only on the user’s physical PC. The term can describe a virtual machine running locally on a computer, but today it commonly refers to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Microsoft’s Azure service for remotely delivering desktops and apps.

What Microsoft desktop virtualization means

Desktop virtualization separates the desktop environment from the device a person uses to access it. Depending on the design, Windows may run in a virtual machine on a local computer or on a remote session host, with the user connecting over a network.

In a cloud context, Microsoft’s main desktop-virtualization service is Azure Virtual Desktop. Microsoft describes AVD as “a desktop and app virtualization service that runs on the cloud.” It can present a complete Windows desktop or individual published applications, which users access through Windows App or a web client. AVD uses reverse connections, so customers do not need to open inbound ports for the service. Microsoft’s AVD overview explains the service and its access model.

The phrase also has a local-computing meaning. Microsoft’s older virtualization book describes a guest operating system running as a virtual machine on a physical host computer; the guest desktop can appear in a window or full screen. This is useful historical context, not current AVD deployment guidance. Understanding Microsoft Virtualization Solutions, 2nd Edition covers that broader, earlier usage.

How Azure Virtual Desktop is organized

AVD separates the Azure service that brokers access from the virtual machines that run user sessions. Microsoft manages the service’s control plane; the organization manages its session-host virtual machines and images in its Azure subscription. Three components determine how desktops and apps are arranged and assigned:

  • Host pool: A group of Azure virtual machines registered as session hosts.
  • Application group: The access layer that publishes either a full desktop or a logical group of applications from a host pool.
  • Workspace: The user-facing grouping through which assigned desktops and apps are presented.

Administrators can manage AVD through the Azure portal, CLI, PowerShell, or REST API. Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop terminology guide defines these components.

Pooled and personal desktops

A host pool can be pooled, with users sharing capacity across session hosts, or personal, with a session host assigned to an individual. Pooled designs can support multi-session Windows and make more efficient use of host capacity; personal assignment fits scenarios requiring a dedicated desktop. Administrators can publish a complete desktop or selected applications through RemoteApp, so users do not necessarily need a full virtual desktop for every workload.

Azure Virtual Desktop vs. Windows 365

Both services provide Windows environments users can reach remotely, but their provisioning and assignment models differ. AVD offers organization-configured Azure session hosts in pooled or personal arrangements. Windows 365 automatically provisions a Cloud PC dedicated to an individual user as a SaaS service. They are related rather than wholly separate technologies: Microsoft says Windows 365 uses AVD to connect and broker user connections to Cloud PCs. See Microsoft’s virtual desktop architecture guidance and Windows 365 service architecture documentation.

Question Azure Virtual Desktop Windows 365
How is it assigned? Session hosts can be pooled among users or assigned personally. A Cloud PC is dedicated to an individual user.
What can users receive? A full desktop or published individual applications. A dedicated Cloud PC desktop.
Who configures the computing environment? The organization configures and manages its Azure session hosts and images. Microsoft delivers the Cloud PC as a SaaS service.
What should shape the choice? Consider whether pooled capacity, published apps, or control over Azure hosts and images fits the workload. Consider whether an individually assigned Cloud PC fits the user and management model.

Neither label alone determines the better choice. Identity, networking, storage, monitoring, workload requirements, and cost all matter; evaluate them against the organization’s own design. Microsoft describes these architectural elements in its architecture guidance, while its AVD product page describes pay-per-use compute and multi-session cost optimization.

What to verify before deploying AVD

Check the current retirement status of AVD classic

Microsoft’s overview states that Azure Virtual Desktop classic retires on September 30, 2026, and says connections to classic resources will be blocked after retirement. Because that stated date has passed, do not assume either that classic resources remain usable or that all post-retirement behavior is unchanged: check the live Microsoft overview and migration guidance for the current status. The notice directs customers with remaining classic resources to move to Azure Resource Manager-based host pools before retirement.

Confirm licensing for the actual users and workload

Windows access licensing depends on the agreement, geography, and workload. A Microsoft licensing brief dated March 2023 lists examples of eligible user licenses for accessing Windows 11 through AVD, including Windows Enterprise, Education, Windows VDA, and Microsoft 365 plans. That dated brief is not a substitute for current terms: verify the requirements that apply to your deployment with Microsoft’s current licensing information or your licensing provider. Read the March 2023 licensing brief.

Validate operating systems, regions, and costs

Microsoft documents Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server desktop experiences in AVD, along with Azure-hosted and hybrid options. Supported configurations, regional availability, and pricing can change, so verify current details for the intended deployment in Microsoft’s AVD documentation and product information.
