Those are reasons to understand the trade-offs—not automatic reasons to avoid one. NIST identifies unique generated passwords and fewer passwords to memorize as security and convenience benefits, while warning that vault security and recovery design matter.
Here are three practical objections, framed as common reader concerns rather than a ranking from a survey.
“Isn’t a password manager a single point of failure?”
It is a legitimate concentration risk: if someone compromises the secret that protects your vault, you may need to replace the passwords stored in it. NIST describes the consequence plainly: “The compromise of the master secret to a password vault would require all passwords in the vault to be recreated.” NIST’s FAQ also notes that many cloud password services are designed so the provider cannot access a user’s vault, even if the service itself is compromised. That is a design found in many services, not a guarantee about every product.
The countervailing benefit is that a manager can generate distinct passwords for different accounts. That limits the damage when one account’s password is exposed: it need not unlock the others. To protect the vault itself, choose a long master passphrase and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) if your manager supports it. These steps reduce risk; they do not make the vault invulnerable.

- ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
- ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
- ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
- ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
- ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!
“What if I forget my master password?”
This is a real usability and security trade-off. A recovery option may help you regain access, but the details matter: recovering the password-manager account, restoring encrypted vault data with a recovery key, and recovering the secret that decrypts the vault are not the same thing. A method that lets someone recover the master password may weaken the protection around the vault. NIST advises avoiding managers that allow master-password recovery, but recovery designs vary and the cited guidance does not compare individual services.
Before storing all your credentials in a manager, find out what happens if you lose access. Use a long passphrase you can protect, and turn on available MFA. NIST recommends both a long master passphrase and MFA where supported. Read NIST’s guidance on vaults and recovery and check the recovery documentation for the specific service you are considering.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
“Does autofill make phishing easier?”
Autofill can make signing in more convenient, but it is not a complete anti-phishing defense. Phishing typically relies on persuading someone to submit information to a fake, attacker-controlled site. A password manager cannot guarantee that a person will recognize every deceptive prompt or avoid handing over a credential another way.
NIST’s digital identity guidelines say, “Verifiers SHALL allow the use of password managers and autofill functionality.” That is an instruction to websites and other service verifiers, not a promise that every login form will work smoothly in every browser or app. See NIST SP 800-63B. For accounts that use passwords, NIST’s consumer guidance recommends using a password manager and adding MFA. NIST explains its password advice here.

MFA adds a layer beyond the password. CISA says MFA can reduce the chance of account access even if a password is compromised, and recommends phishing-resistant MFA. Where your account and password manager support it, consider phishing-resistant MFA. A FIDO2 security key is one possible hardware factor; it is optional, depends on the service’s compatibility, and does not replace a strong master passphrase or encrypt the vault. CISA’s MFA guidance explains the broader role of that extra factor.

A password manager helps create and keep track of distinct credentials, reducing the need to memorize a separate password for each account. It does not remove every account risk. The security outcome also depends on protecting the device and manager account, choosing a recovery setup you understand, and using whatever MFA the relevant services support.

For accounts that require passwords, the FTC likewise advises using strong, unique passwords and MFA as part of account protection. See the FTC’s account-protection advice. There is no single recovery or security design shared by all password managers, so review a particular product’s documentation rather than assuming one service’s behavior applies to all.
