The label in the compose field tells you which transport is active; from there, you can choose the right fix for delivery problems, missing features, a message you need to correct, or unwanted texts. These documented app controls do not guarantee that every RCS feature is available on every device, carrier, or region.
1. Check whether the conversation is using RCS
Look at the compose field before troubleshooting. If it says “RCS message,” Google Messages will send using RCS. If it says “Text message,” the message will use carrier SMS/MMS instead. Google explains these labels and the requirements for RCS in its RCS chats FAQ.
RCS must be supported and enabled for everyone in the conversation. Availability can also depend on the carrier and region. If the field says “Text message,” features such as typing indicators or read receipts may be absent because the thread is not using RCS; that does not necessarily mean the app is malfunctioning.
2. Edit a sent message within 15 minutes
Google Messages lets you edit a sent message for 15 minutes after sending it, whether or not the recipient has read or answered it. The edited message is labeled. If the recipient’s messaging app does not support editing, they receive a new message marked with an asterisk instead. Google documents the limit and recipient behavior in Update a sent message.

Editing is available in the Google Messages app, not its web UI. If the edit option is missing, the 15-minute window may have expired.
3. Touch and hold a message to find its actions
Touch and hold a message to reveal the available actions. Depending on the message and conversation, these can include reacting, replying, forwarding, copying, starring, deleting, and viewing message info. Google’s guide to Google Messages features covers actions for text, images, video, links, files, locations, and contact cards—not just RCS messages. Edit appears in the action menu only while the 15-minute edit window is open.

4. Enable SMS/MMS fallback if RCS messages are not delivered
Google’s RCS settings include an “Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS)” option. When this fallback applies, a message may go through your carrier as SMS/MMS rather than RCS. Follow Google’s RCS chat settings guidance to find the control; menu placement can vary by app version and device.
SMS/MMS uses carrier service, so applicable plan terms or charges may differ from RCS. Google notes that Wi-Fi use avoids additional mobile-data cost, while mobile-data use depends on your plan. Fallback changes the transport; it does not turn SMS/MMS into RCS.

Typing indicators, read receipts, and high-resolution media are RCS capabilities, not universal SMS/MMS features. Google says turning RCS off disables typing indicators and read receipts, and everyone in a conversation needs RCS for the chat to use it. Its RCS FAQ explains the general requirements.
For one-on-one conversations with an iPhone user, Google documents RCS feature support when the iPhone user has RCS enabled. That does not establish that every feature works in every region or group conversation. Check the compose-field label and whether all participants have RCS before treating a missing extra as an app defect. Google’s information about RCS chats with iPhone describes that compatibility.

6. Block unwanted senders—and understand what reporting does
On Android, touch and hold the conversation, choose Block, then select Report spam if you want to report it. Google says reporting also blocks the sender and moves the conversation to “Spam & blocked.” Reporting is optional: you can block without reporting. See Google’s instructions for blocking and reporting spam.
Before reporting, note that Google says a report may include the sender’s number, the last 10 incoming messages, and other message or conversation identifiers and metadata. In a group conversation, information about other participants may also be included. Choose blocking alone if you want to stop messages without submitting a spam report.

Optional: Schedule a message for later
If the annoyance is sending at the wrong time rather than an RCS failure, touch and hold Send, then choose a date and time. A scheduled message can later be edited, sent immediately, or deleted. Google’s message-scheduling help explains the feature.
