There is no single command list that works unchanged across Minecraft Java and Bedrock. Commands and syntax depend on edition, game release, and where you run them. For Bedrock, Microsoft publishes a stable command inventory with permission and cheat requirements; for either edition, use in-game /help to check what your installed version makes available. This is a practical guide to common command groups and the safest way to find the exact syntax for your server.
Why there is no universal Java-and-Bedrock command list
A command reference is only complete for a specified edition and release. Java and Bedrock do not share every command or argument, and syntax can change between game versions. A list that merges both editions without labeling differences can lead to commands failing or behaving differently than expected.
Microsoft’s Bedrock stable command overview is the authoritative starting point for Bedrock commands. It lists commands with descriptions, required permission levels, and whether cheats are required. The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki command category helps distinguish edition-specific commands, but it is not an official guarantee for a particular release. The official Minecraft guide is a useful introduction, not an exhaustive reference.
A complete Java inventory is not established by the available official references here. For Java syntax, check the relevant game and server version in-game rather than assuming a Bedrock entry or a guide example also applies.

Common commands, grouped by what they do
These are examples, not a complete inventory. The official Minecraft guide demonstrates commands across several common tasks; consult the in-game help and edition-specific reference for exact syntax and availability.
| Task | Examples | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| Server access and moderation | /op, /kick |
Manage operator access or remove a player from the server. |
| Player movement and state | /teleport, /kill |
Move a player or entity, or remove an entity. |
| Items and effects | /give, /effect, /enchant |
Provide items or apply effects and enchantments. The latter two are listed in Microsoft’s Bedrock reference. |
| World settings and environment | /difficulty, /time, /weather, /gamerule |
Adjust difficulty, time, weather, or game rules; check the target edition for supported arguments. |
| Blocks, structures, and discovery | /fill, /clone, /locate |
Work with areas or structures and locate points of interest. These are included in the Bedrock inventory. |
| Spawning and world origin | /summon, /setworldspawn, /spawnpoint |
Summon entities or set spawn locations. The official guide demonstrates the first two; Microsoft lists /spawnpoint for Bedrock. |
Bedrock’s inventory also contains server-administration commands such as /allowlist, /deop, /list, /permission, /stop, and /transfer. It includes creator-oriented or specialized commands such as /camera, /camerashake, /gametest, /project, /script, and /scriptevent; these should not be treated as ordinary player or server-admin tools. See the Bedrock command list documentation and overview for the full inventory and access details.

Check command availability and syntax in-game
The most reliable quick check is /help. Microsoft documents /help as available in Bedrock at any permission level without cheats. A bare help command shows a paginated list; adding a command name requests its help and syntax. For example, try /help teleport. The exact suggestions depend on the commands available in that world or server.
- Open chat in the target world or server.
- Enter
/helpto browse available commands, or enter/helpfollowed by the command name to request its syntax. - Start typing a command with
/and use the displayed suggestions or tab completion where available. - Confirm that the command’s arguments match your edition and release before running it.
For Bedrock, Microsoft documents help syntax as /help [command: CommandName] or /help <page: int>. See the Bedrock help command reference and its popular commands guide. Minecraft’s official guide notes that chat commands begin with a slash, arguments follow the command, chat suggestions can help as you type, and the up arrow recalls earlier commands. Duncan Geere’s guide, published September 22, 2023, gives /difficulty easy as an example of a command with an argument.

Permissions, cheats, and where commands run
Being able to see a command in a guide does not mean your account can use it in the current world. On Bedrock, check the command’s permission level and cheat requirement in Microsoft’s inventory. Requirements differ by command: do not assume every command needs cheats, or that every player has the necessary permission.
In multiplayer, the official Minecraft guide says a player needs sufficient permission; a server or Realm owner has permissions by default. If a command is rejected, check the server or world’s access settings and the requirement for that specific command.

Commands can be entered in chat, run from command blocks, used in data packs or behavior packs, or entered in a server console, depending on platform and setup. The execution context can affect how a command is entered and who or what it targets. The official guide covers these contexts in its Minecraft commands overview.

How to use a command list safely
- Identify whether the server is Java or Bedrock and note its game release.
- Use the matching edition-specific reference; do not copy syntax across editions without checking it.
- Check
/helpon the actual server when availability or arguments are uncertain. - For Bedrock, confirm permission and cheat requirements in Microsoft’s command overview.
- Treat examples in an introductory guide as examples, not as an exhaustive list.
