Writing belongs in a developer’s working practice—not because everyone needs to publish a blog, but because software work depends on making decisions, changes, and instructions clear to other people and to your future self. Start with brief notes, then turn the information that will help others into the right team artifact.
Why writing is part of software development
Developers do more than produce code. They document systems, report defects, explain decisions, and help other people understand how software works. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists documentation and communication among the duties and skills of software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers. It specifically notes that developers need to explain problems to teammates and software behavior to nontechnical users.
Those explanations need not be essays. A clear pull request, useful issue description, short runbook, or note about an unexpected behavior can make work easier to review and maintain. Writing gives a decision or discovery a form that someone else can use without reconstructing the whole conversation.
Communication also appears in research on developer work, but the distinction between association and cause matters. Google’s 2022 analysis identified team communication among factors linked to developers’ perceived productivity; the strongest causal evidence reported in its abstract concerned perceived code quality, not writing. A separate 2019 survey of 622 developers across three companies examined predictors of self-rated productivity, not the effects of adopting a writing habit. Neither study shows that writing by itself makes someone more productive.

In a survey of 3,151 non-development professionals at one large multinational company, some respondents said they wanted to learn programming to have more effective technical conversations. That finding is context about communication across roles, not evidence that writing training improves software outcomes.
What reflective writing can—and cannot—do
Private reflection is different from publishing. In a University of Zurich HASEL study, 52 professional software developers reflected daily for two to three work weeks and set concrete goals and strategies. The study page, which lists the publication as accepted to IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, reports participant self-assessments:
Rank #2
- 320 Pages Paper - Journaling notebooks with 320 pages provides you with enough writing space. A5 notebook journal with 100gsm paper, thicker than normal paper, will not cause bleeding, ghosting or smudging and is suitable for most types of pens.

- 80.8% said reflection supported identifying goals.
- 83.3% said it supported developing actionable strategies.
- 84.5% reported greater awareness of work habits, progress, and achievements.
- 79.6% reported productive short-term behavior changes.
- 96.1% said they could imagine continuing regular self-reflection afterward; this is stated intention, not evidence of sustained practice.
These figures describe what participants reported in that study. The sample was small, the reflection period lasted only a few work weeks, and the outcomes do not establish universal or long-term causal effects. They suggest that structured reflection can help developers notice patterns and choose next steps; they do not prove that journaling makes someone a better coder or guarantees a career benefit.
Choose a writing format for its audience and purpose
There is no established best format for every developer. The cited sources do not directly compare private journaling, team documentation, and public blogging for developer outcomes. Choose by asking who needs the information, what they need it for, how exposed it will be, and whether the format is easy to repeat.

| Format | Audience and purpose | Exposure and effort |
|---|---|---|
| Private reflection | Yourself: capture what happened, what you learned, and what to try next. | Low exposure; can be a short note after work you already completed. |
| Team writing | Colleagues and maintainers: explain changes, decisions, procedures, or incidents in pull requests, issues, design notes, runbooks, release notes, or reviews. | Shared within a work context; keep it concise and useful to the people who will rely on it. |
| Public writing | Broader readers: teach a concept, explain a solution, or share a carefully checked lesson. | Wider exposure; review for correctness, missing context, and employer confidentiality before publishing. |
Start with a small repeatable habit
Do not begin by imposing a large daily quota or assuming that every note should become a post. After a debugging session or completed task, spend a few minutes answering four questions:
- What problem did I face?
- What did I try?
- What did I learn or decide?
- What should the next person—or my future self—know?
This is a practical starting prompt, not a protocol tested by the HASEL study. If the note reveals information someone else needs, move the relevant part into the appropriate team artifact. Keep uncertainties visible rather than presenting a tentative explanation as fact. When a detail is no longer useful, the private note does not need to become permanent documentation.

For ongoing learning, MDN recommends curiosity, regular reading or small research projects, dedicated learning time, and continued practice. That advice is aimed at web development learners; it supports a broader habit of learning, not a claim that writing alone improves recall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to share—and when to keep a note private
Share writing when it solves a real communication problem: a teammate needs the rationale for a change, an operator needs steps to recover a service, or a user needs an explanation in accessible language. Public publishing is optional. Before posting outside your organization, check that the material is accurate, has enough context to be understood, and does not expose confidential code, incidents, customer information, or internal plans.

The BLS occupational profile establishes that communication and documentation are part of software work; it does not prescribe a writing cadence. The HASEL study supports reflection as a way participants reported identifying goals and noticing habits; it does not establish a universal schedule. Start with notes that help you do work already on your plate, and let their usefulness—not a public posting streak—determine what comes next.
