To configure SiteLock SMART Database Scan, first set up the website’s server access, then provide its database settings, save, and start a scan manually. WordPress and Joomla can be detected automatically; other platforms require you to enter their database connection details.
Before you start: gather server and database details
Have a working FTP account and the database connection information ready. You may need the database host, port, username, password, and database name. If you do not know these details, ask your hosting provider or website administrator.
For a CMS installation, SiteLock identifies these common configuration-file locations:
- WordPress:
/<website root>/wp-config.php - Joomla:
/<website root>/configuration.php - Drupal:
/<website root>/settings.php
A custom site may store its connection settings in a file such as configuration.php, settings.php, or connection.php. The site’s developer may need to identify the correct file.

Configure SiteLock server access
- In SiteLock, go to Sites > Manage Website > Settings > Server Access.
- Choose Same Credentials if the services use the same server login. Choose Separate Credentials if they need different access details.
- Enter the requested connection information: connection type, host, port, username, and password or SSH key. Add transfer settings if offered.
- Set the website root directory so SiteLock can reach the site’s files.
SiteLock recommends SFTP with SSH as the most secure server-connection option. FTP and FTPS are also listed. Select the option your host supports and enter the matching credentials.
Set the SMART Database Scan connection
- Open Database Settings.
- Select WordPress or Joomla if your site uses one of those platforms. SiteLock says it can detect their configuration files automatically.
- For another platform, select Other, enter the full website URL, and provide the database host, port, username, password, and database name.
localhost commonly works when the website and database run on the same server. If the database is hosted separately, use its actual hostname or IP address instead. MySQL’s default port is 3306; enter a different port if your host uses a custom one.
Save the settings and run a scan
- Save the database configuration.
- Go to Security Report > Security Scans.
- Open the SMART Database Scan details and click Scan Now.
The database scan is on-demand rather than automatic. SiteLock says the time it takes depends on database size and may be several minutes.

Review and act on scan findings
Open threat details to review findings, or export them as a CSV. SiteLock distinguishes between cleaning and deleting a record:

- Delete permanently removes the record’s data. Confirm that you have a backup before deleting.
Troubleshoot setup and connection problems
SiteLock cannot see the expected website directory
The FTP user may be limited to a home-directory path that points to an automatically created or incorrect folder. Check the user’s access scope and select the correct website directory in the setup wizard.
The server connection fails
Check the connection type, host, port, username, and authentication method against the details from your host. SiteLock’s API documentation lists errors such as a missing directory, invalid credentials, an unreachable host, denied access, and missing write permission.

The database connection fails
Confirm the database host and port rather than assuming the web server and database share a host. If the correct values or configuration-file location are unclear, ask your developer or hosting provider; SiteLock support also offers configuration help.
You are configuring a custom CMS
Select Other and enter the database details manually. If you cannot find them in the site’s configuration files, ask the original developer or hosting provider to identify the connection settings.
