Cannot Open Attachments in Gmail? Causes and Fixes

Find out why a Gmail attachment won’t open or download, then follow the right fix for confidential mode, blocked files, browser trouble, network access, or Drive sharing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you can’t open or download an attachment in Gmail, first check whether the sender restricted it with confidential mode or Gmail flagged the file as unsafe. If neither applies, follow Google’s desktop steps in order: confirm your browser is supported, turn extensions off one at a time, then clear cache and cookies. For a Drive link, ask the sender to grant access; if attachments fail across browsers, a network administrator or internet provider may need to check whether the attachment host is blocked.

First identify what you’re trying to open

Gmail messages can contain an ordinary attachment, a photo displayed inside the message, or a Google Drive link. The right fix depends on which one you have.

  • Ordinary attachment: Look for its file card or attachment controls in the message.
  • Inline photo: Some photos appear in the body of the email rather than in the attachment area. Google provides separate steps for viewing or saving these images in its desktop attachment instructions.
  • Drive link: The message links to a file stored in Drive. A permission error means the sender may need to grant your account access.

For personal Gmail accounts, Google states that the total sending attachment limit is 25 MB; larger messages are sent using a Google Drive link. Work and school account limits are set by the Workspace administrator. This sending limit explains why a message may contain a Drive link, but it does not by itself diagnose a download failure.

Check whether access is restricted or the file was flagged

Confidential mode prevents downloading by design

A sender can use Gmail confidential mode to prevent recipients from downloading or copying message content and attachments. Changing browsers or devices will not remove a sender-side restriction. Ask the sender to provide an accessible copy or share the file another way. Google’s attachment guidance explains this limitation.

Gmail may block a file it considers unsafe

Gmail scans attachments. Google says an attachment identified as containing a known virus cannot be downloaded; a temporary scanner outage may mean you need to try again later. Gmail also blocks certain risky file types and combinations, including some archives and macro-enabled documents. Its blocked-file list can change, so consult Google’s current list of file types blocked in Gmail rather than relying on a static list.

If Gmail shows a virus, suspicious-file, or blocked-type warning, treat it as a security decision, not a browser glitch. Confirm that you expected the message and trust its sender; do not try to bypass the warning for an unexpected file. Google’s attachment scanning guidance describes scanning, while Chrome’s download guidance explains that the browser may independently block files judged dangerous, suspicious, unverified, or insecure.

Fix a general attachment failure on a computer

When there is no sender restriction or security warning, Google recommends this desktop sequence for attachments that will not upload or download. Try each step and retest if practical, so you can see whether it changes the result.

  1. Confirm your browser is supported. Use a browser supported by Gmail; Google lists this first in its desktop attachment troubleshooting steps.
  2. Turn off extensions one at a time. Retry after each change. If the problem stops when a particular extension is off, that points to an extension conflict.
  3. Clear cache and cookies. Then reopen Gmail and test the attachment again. This is one step in Google’s sequence, not a guaranteed fix for every attachment problem.

Google’s recommended order is browser support, extensions, then cache and cookies. These steps help investigate browser-related problems; they do not override confidential mode or Gmail’s file-security restrictions.

Check the network, preview, or Drive permissions

If attachments fail in more than one browser

Try another supported browser and check whether a proxy is involved. Google says attachments are hosted on mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com; a network or internet provider may block that domain. For an attachment-availability problem that persists, contact your network administrator or internet provider. Google’s attachment help covers browser and proxy checks and advises contacting the provider when attachments are unavailable.

If only a video preview fails

Download the video and open it in your device’s video player. Google gives this as a workaround for a video that will not preview in Gmail; it will not help if Gmail is blocking the download itself.

If the message contains a Drive link

Open the link and check whether the file is available to the Google account you are using. If Drive reports that you need permission, ask the sender to grant access. A Drive link is a separate sharing route, not an ordinary attachment download.

Download or save an attachment in Gmail for Android

In the Gmail app, open the message and tap the download icon to download an attachment, or tap Save to Drive to save it to Drive. For a photo embedded in the email, use the separate image-viewing and saving options. Google’s Android attachment instructions cover these controls. Browser-extension troubleshooting applies to desktop browsers, not the Gmail Android app.
