If friends can’t join your game server, first find out where the connection fails: on the host computer, elsewhere on the local network, or only from outside it. Then check that the server is still running, players are using the right address, and the game’s specific firewall and network requirements are met. Port numbers and crash fixes vary by game and server backend, so don’t apply one game’s settings to another.
First, locate where the failure happens
A server process that appears to start is not proof that other players can reach it. Steam Support describes firewall permissions and router configuration as part of hosting a local Valve game server. Before changing settings, record the game, server backend, host operating system, client and server versions, and exact error message.
- Does the server stay running? Check its process and startup output. If it exits or reports an error, investigate startup before network access.
- Can a player on the host computer join? If not, check the server’s state, game version, address, and startup output first.
- Can another device on the same LAN join? If local joining works but outside players cannot connect, focus on the external network path.
- Can anyone outside the LAN join? If not, verify the backend’s requirements, firewall permission, and router rule where applicable.
- Is Steam itself timing out? Check whether Steam has a connectivity issue before changing server files.
This is a diagnostic sequence, not a universal game-specific test. Games differ in how they advertise servers, accept local connections, and route traffic.
The server starts, but connection times out
Try the address that fits the player’s location
A public address is not always the right address for someone connecting from the host machine or the same LAN. For Valheim, the community troubleshooting guide recommends trying 127.0.0.1 on the server computer and the server’s internal IP for a same-LAN connection. Treat these as Valheim-specific diagnostics; other games may use different join flows.

Confirm the server is still running
Check the server process and startup output while attempting to join. If the process has stopped or reports an error, address that startup problem before troubleshooting router reachability. Keep the exact error text: a startup failure and a timeout from an outside player point to different parts of the setup.
Check the backend, firewall, and game-specific ports

| Game or server type | Documented setting | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Valheim, Steam backend | Default range 2456–2457 | Iron Gate Studio’s 2024 dedicated-server guide says this backend needs port forwarding for internet access. |
| Valheim, Crossplay backend | No port forwarding required for outside-LAN access | Iron Gate Studio’s 2024 guide says Crossplay sends data through a relay server. |
| Steam’s local Valve-game server instructions | Port 27015 as an example | Steam Support uses this as an example for its described server; it is not a default for unrelated games. |
| Steam dedicated/listen servers | TCP local 27015 for SRCDS Rcon; UDP local 27015 for gameplay | These are Steam Support’s stated defaults for those specific purposes, not universal game settings. |
For Valheim, identify the backend before configuring forwarding
In Iron Gate Studio’s 2024 guide, the Steam backend requires forwarding the default range 2456–2457 to make the server accessible over the internet. The Crossplay backend uses a relay and does not require port forwarding for access from outside the local network. Choose settings for the backend actually in use; the documented network difference alone does not establish which backend is best for every player or platform combination.
Allow the server through the firewall
Iron Gate’s guide instructs Valheim users to allow the server through the Windows Firewall prompt. Steam Support’s local Valve-server guidance likewise describes allowing unsolicited incoming connections in the firewall and forwarding the server port on the router. Allow only the game or server software you intend to host, and follow the current instructions for that game and operating system.

Verify any router forwarding rule
If the game’s official instructions call for forwarding, check that the rule points to the server computer’s current internal IP address and uses the specified port and protocol. Router interfaces differ, and forwarding by itself may not resolve every network arrangement; the cited instructions do not cover every double-NAT or carrier-grade NAT setup. If the rule appears correct but outside connections still fail, consult the game or network provider’s current guidance rather than guessing at additional ports.
Could Steam connectivity be the problem?
If Steam itself is timing out or other Steam connectivity is failing, check Steam’s status and connectivity guidance before changing server files. Steam Support identifies firewall interference as a possible issue and suggests testing with a direct wired connection when possible. This helps distinguish a platform or network-wide problem from a fault in the game server configuration.

The server crashes or fails after an update
For modded Valheim, check the loader, mods, and logs
The community Valheim modding wiki recommends checking whether the mod loader starts, whether required server-side mods are installed, and whether the server and mods remain compatible after updates. Inspect the server-side mod log for diagnostic errors. These checks apply to modded Valheim setups; they do not establish a fix for an unmodded server or another game.
Match the diagnosis to the evidence
Record the server and client versions, the update timing, the startup output, and any relevant log errors. A crash after an update is a reason to check compatibility and required components before concluding that the machine needs new hardware. The available guidance does not establish universal hardware requirements or one fix for crashes across games.

When self-hosting is the obstacle
Self-hosting makes the player responsible for the game’s required network setup and for keeping the server available. If you lack router access, an always-on computer, or time to maintain the setup, managed game-server hosting is a category-level alternative to investigate. Compare a provider’s supported game and version, setup responsibilities, backup arrangements, mod support, and support terms before choosing one. No particular provider or current offer is established here.
