Then review sync settings: a profile separates data locally, but selected data can still sync to an account and other devices. For a shared computer, use separate operating-system user accounts too; browser profiles alone do not prevent someone using the same OS account from accessing local data.
What a browser profile separates—and what it does not
A full browser profile is the broadest practical choice for keeping identities apart. Firefox describes profiles as separating bookmarks, passwords, settings, add-ons, browsing history, cookies and logins. Edge likewise treats profile data separately. Mozilla Support summarizes the distinction: “Profiles allow for complete separation of all data between profiles—including bookmarks, passwords, settings, add-ons, browsing history and browsing data (such as cookies and logins).” Mozilla Support: Manage Firefox profiles.
That separation applies to browser data stored in each profile; it does not automatically control what is uploaded through sync, nor does it create a password barrier between profiles on the same operating-system account. Think of a profile as a separate browser workspace, not a separate device user.
Set up separate profiles for each identity
- Create one profile per identity. For example, keep work and personal browsing in different profiles. Use clear names and, where available, distinct colors or icons so you can recognize the active profile before entering credentials.
- Sign in only to the intended browser account. In each profile, use the browser account meant for that identity. When creating a profile, avoid importing existing browsing data unless you deliberately want it copied into the new profile. Some managed Chrome profile flows can allow existing local browsing data to be imported; organizations can also require a separate managed profile. - Review sync settings in each profile. Decide which available categories—such as bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions or open tabs—should sync. Sync is a separate decision from local profile separation: enabled categories can be associated with the signed-in account and made available on other signed-in devices. In managed Chrome deployments, administrators may be able to disable browser sign-in and sync or require a separate managed profile; see the same Chrome policy documentation.
- Check the active profile before signing in to websites. Browser-account separation does not prevent a person from manually signing into the wrong website account. Confirm the profile name or visual cue before entering a work or personal login, especially when moving between windows.
Choose the right kind of separation

When Firefox Containers are enough
Use Firefox Multi-Account Containers when your specific problem is keeping different logins or cookies for sites in separate contexts—for example, using two accounts on a site without signing out each time. Assign the relevant sites to the intended container and keep in mind that Containers do not divide the rest of the profile’s data. They are unavailable in Private Browsing windows and when “Never Remember History” is selected, according to Mozilla’s documentation.

Firefox Total Cookie Protection has a different purpose: Mozilla describes it as isolating cookies and related data across sites to limit tracking. It complements Containers but does not create separate sets of bookmarks, passwords, extensions or settings for work and personal identities.
On a shared device, protect the operating-system account
Browser profiles can generally be switched without entering a password. Chromium cautions that multiple browser profiles under one operating-system identity are not a special local-privacy boundary from that identity’s user; see Chromium Project: Multiple Chrome Users. Edge’s profile documentation also distinguishes profiles from a password-protected device account: Microsoft Learn: User data and privacy in Microsoft Edge.

If another person uses the same computer, give each person a separate operating-system account and lock your session when you step away. A browser profile helps avoid accidental crossover, but it should not be treated as protection from someone with access to your OS account.

Removing a local profile and deleting account data in the cloud are not necessarily the same action. Microsoft says removing an Edge profile deletes its local profile data, while data already synced may remain in Microsoft’s cloud and may require separate account-side handling. Check Microsoft’s guidance on Edge user data and privacy before assuming profile removal also deletes synced data. This distinction matters if you are retiring an account, removing a work profile or troubleshooting data that has appeared on another device.

Quick checklist
- Give each identity its own profile and make the profiles visually distinguishable.
- Use only the appropriate browser account in each profile; do not import old data unintentionally.
- Review sync choices separately in every profile.
- Use Firefox Containers for separate site logins within one Firefox profile, not for whole-browser separation.
- Use a separate operating-system account when other people share the device.
- Before deleting a profile, determine whether synced copies need separate removal from the associated account.
