Apple Intelligence doesn’t always keep a request on your device: Apple says many models run locally, while requests that need more computing power may be sent to Private Cloud Compute (PCC). To make an informed privacy choice, check Apple’s off-device activity report, treat optional analytics as a separate setting, and review any third-party extension before sharing sensitive information.
Does Apple Intelligence send your data to the cloud?
Sometimes. Apple says an on-device model first assesses whether it can handle a task locally. More complex requests may be sent to PCC, where server-based models can provide additional computing capacity. Apple says only information relevant to the request is sent, the result is returned to your device, and request data is not retained or accessible to Apple. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy commitments, not a guarantee that every Apple Intelligence task stays on-device. See Apple’s Apple Intelligence and privacy disclosure and Private Cloud Compute security guide.
Apple describes PCC safeguards including Secure Enclave protections, signed and verified server software, attestation, and software that independent researchers can inspect. Apple also describes a requirement for “stateless computation on personal user data.” Those design features are relevant to how PCC is meant to handle requests, but they should not be confused with an audit of the quality or integrity of every AI response.
Request content and operational information are different
Apple says it may collect limited operational information when PCC or Private Information Retrieval is used, such as approximate request and response size, which features were used, and processing duration. Apple says this metadata excludes request and response content and is not identifiable or linked to an Apple Account. This is distinct from the content needed to fulfill a request.

How to see what Apple Intelligence sends off your device
Use the Apple Intelligence report to inspect the off-device activity Apple documents. The setting’s exact name and availability can vary with device and operating-system version; Apple’s current support guides explain the iPhone and Mac paths for supported software: iPhone guide and Mac guide.
- Open Settings on iPhone or System Settings on Mac.
- Open Privacy & Security and look for Apple Intelligence Report. The label or route may differ by OS release.
- Choose the reporting duration offered on your device, then view or export the report if you want to inspect or retain the activity.
Apple says the report includes requests sent off-device to PCC. Its disclosure also says it can include ChatGPT extension requests made through supported features when that integration is enabled. The report is a view into documented routing, not a complete independent audit of every part of Apple Intelligence. An empty report means no PCC request was recorded for the selected period; it does not prove that you had no Apple Intelligence activity.

Can you turn off Apple Intelligence data sharing?
There is no single analytics switch that prevents an individual request from using PCC. Apple’s optional Device Analytics setting concerns contribution of privacy-preserving aggregate trend data; it is separate from the processing decision for a particular task.
- Open Settings on iPhone or System Settings on Mac.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements.
- Turn off Share [Device] Analytics on iPhone or Share Mac Analytics on Mac if you do not want to opt in to that analytics sharing. Labels can vary by device and software version.
Apple describes this analytics choice and related disclosures in its privacy disclosure. Turning it off should not be treated as a per-request control for on-device versus PCC processing.

Review third-party extensions separately
Some supported Apple Intelligence features can offer an extension that sends a request to ChatGPT. If you enable the integration, Apple says requests made through supported features can appear in transparency logging. The recipient and handling may differ from a request processed by Apple’s own on-device models or PCC.
- Read the consent prompt and current privacy terms before enabling an extension or sending it content.
- Avoid submitting highly sensitive health, financial, personal, or work information unless you understand what the provider will receive and how it handles that information.
- Revisit your choice if the integration, its settings, or the provider’s terms change.
Apple’s privacy disclosure describes extension-related logging, but the precise behavior and choices presented can change. Check the current consent screen and provider guidance on your device.

What the available verification does—and does not—establish
Apple publishes PCC security information and SOC 3 reports, but their scope matters. Apple’s SOC 3 FAQ says reports cover PCC provisioning controls and are published quarterly. It lists an April 2026 examination period ending April 30, 2026. The FAQ also states: “The examinations were not conducted to evaluate the performance or integrity of Apple’s artificial intelligence services.” See Apple’s SOC 3 report FAQ.
Independent inspection of PCC software and published security controls can help verify aspects of Apple’s stated architecture. It does not establish that every live request has been individually audited, nor does the SOC 3 examination assess the overall performance or integrity of Apple Intelligence services.

Privacy checklist before using Apple Intelligence
- Check the Apple Intelligence report periodically, especially after using features that may require server processing.
- Read the report as a record of documented off-device requests for its selected period, not as proof that all activity was or was not processed.
- Decide separately whether to share optional device analytics; do not rely on that choice to block PCC requests.
- Review each third-party extension’s prompt and terms before sending it information, particularly sensitive material.
- Keep your device software current and confirm that the feature and report are available for your hardware, language, region, and OS version using Apple’s relevant support guide.
