A body control module (BCM) can be involved when several electrical features act up, but symptoms alone do not prove the module has failed. Diagnose the vehicle before replacing parts: record what is happening, scan the body systems with a compatible tool, and check manufacturer service information for the exact vehicle and VIN. In some documented cases, a BCM software update—not a replacement module—was the prescribed fix.
What a BCM problem can look like
The BCM manages or coordinates body-related electrical functions, but its responsibilities vary by vehicle. Problems that may lead a technician to investigate the BCM include unrelated-seeming functions behaving incorrectly, intermittent electrical symptoms, or a vehicle that does not enter its normal parked sleep state. Those clues are not a universal fault list and do not identify the cause on their own.
For example, FCA US LLC bulletin 08-174-25, dated May 24, 2025, lists battery drain, ignition-off draw, the instrument panel switching off and on as a 2024 Jeep Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer enters sleep mode, and door-lock indicator lamps remaining illuminated. FCA attributed those specified conditions to BCM software and prescribed reprogramming for vehicles covered by the bulletin. Read the bulletin and its applicability details.
Other FCA bulletins tie inoperative auto-folding mirrors to BCM software on certain 2024 and 2023 Jeep Compass vehicles. These are vehicle-specific examples, not evidence that the same symptoms on another vehicle mean the BCM is defective.

How to diagnose a suspected BCM problem
- Document the symptoms. List every affected function and note when each problem occurs, whether it is constant or intermittent, and whether it changes after the vehicle is parked or goes to sleep. For battery drain, record when the battery loses charge and under what conditions.
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, make, model, trim and relevant equipment, powertrain, market, VIN, and build date if available. Service bulletins can apply only to particular configurations or build ranges.
- Scan the body systems. Use a scan tool and diagnostic procedures that can communicate with the vehicle’s body modules. Save all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), including which module reported each one, and record related symptoms before clearing codes. A basic OBD-II reader may only read engine-related information; do not assume it can access the BCM.
- Check manufacturer service information. Search current service information and bulletins for the VIN, configuration, and exact complaint. Confirm the bulletin’s model, build-date and equipment requirements before treating its repair as applicable.
- Follow the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure. Check related systems and pursue the cause identified by the procedure. Do not replace a BCM based on a symptom or a code alone: wiring, other components, or a software issue may need investigation.
FCA’s 2025 bulletin instructs technicians: “Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in DealerCONNECT/Service Library, verify all related systems are functioning as designed.” The bulletin also permits an equivalent scan tool. See TSB 08-174-25.

These bulletins do not establish a universal symptom list, failure rate, DTC list, wiring test, or repair for other vehicles. Check current manufacturer service information for the actual VIN; a similar complaint can have a different cause or remedy on another configuration.

When BCM reprogramming or replacement is appropriate
Reprogramming is appropriate when the vehicle-specific diagnosis and applicable manufacturer procedure call for it. A software update addressed the documented complaints in the FCA examples above, so replacing the module without confirming the cause risks an unnecessary repair.
BCM programming is not a generic do-it-yourself step. The cited FCA procedure controls battery voltage during flashing, requires a restart if flashing is interrupted, and includes additional precautions for hybrid vehicles. Its voltage limits and procedure apply to that bulletin only; they should not be transferred to another vehicle. Follow the exact OEM instructions and use qualified service. Work on relevant high-voltage systems must be performed by technicians with the required training.

What information to provide a repair shop
- Year, make, model, trim, powertrain, market, and VIN.
- Relevant equipment, such as power-folding mirrors, and build date if available.
- Each affected function, when it fails, and whether the issue is intermittent.
- Battery-drain timing and any relationship to parking or sleep mode.
- All-module scan results, with each DTC and the module that reported it, if available.
A scan tool should explicitly support the vehicle’s body systems and BCM functions; confirm compatibility with the exact year, make, and model. A generic engine-code reader is not a substitute for body-system diagnostics.
