What Size Should a QR Code Be for Printing?

For ordinary print, start with a QR code about one-tenth the intended scan distance in width, then proof it at final size. GS1 packaging follows its own sizing guidance.

For a QR code on a flyer, label, or sign, a useful starting point is to make the printed code about one-tenth as wide as the distance at which people will scan it: about 3 cm for a 30 cm scan distance, or 20 cm for a 2 m distance. That is a print guide’s rule of thumb, not an ISO requirement or a guarantee. Dense codes and difficult print or scanning conditions may need more space. For GS1 packaging, use the dimensions and placement rules for the specific GS1 application instead.

Choose a size for the intended scanning distance

UseQR’s practical print guidance, reviewed August 21, 2026, suggests a code width of roughly one-tenth the scan distance. Treat the ratio as a starting estimate: camera capability, lighting, motion, print quality, and the amount of encoded information all affect whether a code scans reliably.

Intended scan distance Approximate code width from the 1:10 rule
30 cm 3 cm
1 m 10 cm
2 m 20 cm
3 m 30 cm
10 m 1 m

These are estimates, not guaranteed minimums. Add room when people may be moving, the light is poor, or the camera is likely to be limited. The same guide advises against printing an ordinary consumer QR code much below about 2 cm, but that is its recommendation—not a universal standard-backed floor.

Account for code density

A QR code carrying more information can contain more modules in the same symbol area. As a result, each module may print smaller, making the code harder to reproduce or scan. If space is tight, shorten the encoded payload where possible, then generate and validate a new code. Do not assume that a code that worked at a larger size will work equally well after shrinking.

Keep the quiet zone clear

The quiet zone is the blank margin around the code. Leave it unobstructed on all four sides: do not let text, artwork, another barcode, or a trim edge intrude. General print guidance describes a four-module margin. For QR Codes powered by GS1, the October 2024 GS1 branding guideline specifies a quiet zone four times the X-dimension for the covered application. The required blank area is part of the printed layout, not spare space to fill with design.

GS1 packaging uses a different sizing basis

If the QR code is a QR Code powered by GS1 using GS1 Digital Link on a consumer unit, do not size it by applying the general 1:10 scan-distance estimate. GS1’s October 2024 branding guideline gives an X-dimension range of 0.396–0.990 mm for that application, with 0.495 mm as the target. The X-dimension is the width of one module; the actual symbol size also depends on the number of modules, and therefore on the encoded data.

GS1 UK illustrates the effect with a specific 29-column example at the minimum X-dimension: including the four-module quiet zone, it measures 14.6 mm square. That is an example for the stated dimensions and column count, not a universal minimum for QR codes or all packaging. GS1 UK also notes that packaging space, scanning conditions, print quality, and process resolution affect the appropriate X-dimension.

Check point-of-sale use and placement

GS1’s guideline describes QR Codes powered by GS1 as intended for both point-of-sale scanning and consumer engagement. If a linear barcode and a QR code both appear during the transition, the guideline says the QR code intended for POS should be within 50 mm of the linear barcode’s centre to achieve the target retail scanning items per minute; greater separation risks the POS scanner not seeing it. A code intended only for consumer engagement may be elsewhere on the package. For a live packaging run, confirm the current GS1 specification and applicable requirements rather than relying on an example alone.

Prepare artwork at its final print size

Use SVG or PDF when possible so artwork can scale without becoming pixelated. If a raster file is required, the print guide recommends a PNG created at 300 DPI at the final physical size. This is a production recommendation for raster artwork, not a QR standard requirement. DPI describes the image’s print resolution; it does not determine the QR code’s physical dimensions or replace the need to preserve legible modules. Avoid enlarging a small bitmap after export.

Proof the printed code before production

Test a physical proof at its intended size and on the intended material. The print guide recommends printing at 100% scale and scanning at the intended distance with more than one phone, including checks in dim light and at a slight angle. These are practical checks, not a reported test result or guarantee of performance.

  5. If a scan fails or is inconsistent, increase the symbol size, improve the contrast or print quality, or reduce the encoded information, then proof the revised version.

For GS1 retail packaging, include the relevant POS scanner and check the code against the current GS1 requirements; a phone scan alone does not establish retail compliance.
