A reduced-hours four-day workweek means fewer total hours per week, usually with one extra day off; a compressed workweek fits roughly the same weekly hours into fewer, longer days. So a four-day workweek does not automatically mean a shorter workweek. Ask whether weekly hours and pay change, how long each shift is, and whether the day off is fixed or staggered.
Four-day workweek vs. compressed workweek: What’s the difference?
The key difference is total weekly working time, not the number of days on the calendar. In a reduced-hours arrangement, working time falls. In a compressed arrangement, the same or a similar number of hours are redistributed across fewer days.

The examples illustrate the distinction, not a universal policy. UKRI’s definition for the UK pilot was a 20% reduction in working time without a pay reduction; it explicitly excluded longer days without reduced hours. UKRI’s 2023 explanation quotes Professor Brendan Burchell describing a four-day week as shorthand for a 20% reduction in working time.
Does a four-day workweek mean fewer hours?
Not necessarily. “Four-day workweek” is used for different arrangements, including both reduced-hours policies and compressed schedules. To know what an employer means, get the details in concrete terms rather than relying on the label.

- Weekly hours: How many hours are expected each week, and is that fewer than the current contract?
- Pay: Will pay remain unchanged, be adjusted, or depend on overtime?
- Daily shifts: What are the scheduled start and finish times, including breaks?
- Days off: Is the day off the same for everyone, fixed for each worker, or staggered to maintain coverage?
- Workload and availability: Are duties being redesigned, or are the same tasks expected in less time? Are workers expected to answer messages or attend meetings on the nominal day off?
These details also matter for weekday appointments, caregiving, commuting, recovery after long shifts, customer coverage and handoffs between teams. Local employment rules vary, so questions about legal hours, breaks, overtime or contract changes need location-specific advice; the evidence cited here does not establish legal requirements for any particular jurisdiction.
Is a 4/10 schedule the same as a four-day workweek?
A 4/10 schedule usually means four 10-hour shifts, for about 40 hours total. That is a compressed workweek: fewer workdays, but not fewer weekly hours. By contrast, four eight-hour shifts total 32 hours, which is a reduced-hours week if the previous schedule was 40 hours.

Those examples also show why daily length matters. A longer shift may change fatigue, care arrangements and the usable length of the day, even when weekly hours do not change. A shorter weekly total may create another nonwork day, but only if the employer does not shift the same workload into the remaining days.
What does the evidence say about the two arrangements?
The evidence described below is more developed for reduced-hours schedules that preserve pay than for compressed schedules. It points to potential benefits in participating organizations, not a guaranteed result for every worker, industry or implementation. There is not yet a simple, definitive head-to-head verdict in the sources cited here.

Reduced-hours pilots and studies
A UK pilot ran from June to December 2022 with 61 organizations and around 2,900 workers. Participating organizations committed to cut working hours by 20% for six months without reducing pay. At the end, UKRI reported that 71% of employees had reduced burnout and 39% were less stressed. The number of staff leaving participating organizations fell by 57% during the trial. Of the 61 companies, 56 continued with the four-day week and 18 said the policy was permanent. These are findings about the participating organizations, not general adoption or guaranteed effects elsewhere. UKRI’s 2023 results summary and its 2024 account of staff turnover report these figures.
A 2025 Nature Human Behaviour study covered 2,896 employees in 141 organizations across Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, with 12 control companies. It reported improvements in burnout, job satisfaction, mental health and physical health compared with those controls. The intervention preserved income while reducing hours, and reported improvements were associated with reduced working time; improved self-reported work ability, fewer sleep problems and reduced fatigue were identified as mediating factors. The results concern that intervention and participating organizations, not every schedule described as a four-day week. The study in Nature Human Behaviour provides the study details.

Compressed-schedule findings
A 2024 study of a compressed schedule at one construction company examined time pressure, fatigue, perceived productivity and work-life balance. Its abstract emphasizes that employee expectations shape outcomes but does not report effect sizes. A 2026 UK panel-study abstract compares reduced-hours and compressed arrangements and reports mental-health and leisure-satisfaction benefits for the reduced-hours form. The available abstract does not provide comparative effect sizes or settle which format performs better across outcomes. Those sources are not enough to claim that compressed schedules have the same effects as reduced-hours schedules or to declare an overall winner.

A reduced-hours policy cannot rely on workers simply completing an unchanged workload faster. Employers need to examine work design, coverage and fairness alongside the calendar. In the UK pilot, participating organizations used approaches including shorter meetings and technology to reduce time without compromising productivity. The researchers also considered fairness, inclusion and job security. UKRI’s 2024 implementation account describes these approaches.

- Workload: Identify tasks to stop, simplify, automate or redistribute rather than treating every hour saved as a demand for faster work.
- Meetings and communication: Shorten or reduce meetings where possible, and set clear expectations for response times and handoffs.
- Coverage: Decide whether teams need staggered days off, minimum staffing levels or different arrangements for customer-facing roles.
- Fairness: Check whether the policy works across roles, shifts and care needs, and whether some groups would carry extra work or lose access to the benefit.
- Measurement: Track working hours, workload, service levels, quality, overtime and worker wellbeing so the organization can spot trade-offs rather than assume productivity is unchanged.
How should workers and employers compare the options?
If you are considering a schedule
Ask for the weekly hours, pay arrangement, shift lengths and day-off rules in writing. Then consider whether a longer day is sustainable for you, whether the day off lines up with care or appointments, and whether the proposed workload fits the stated hours.
If you are designing a schedule
Start with the work that must be covered and the outcomes the organization needs to maintain. Compare the cost of longer daily shifts with the operational benefits of a shorter weekly total. Map customer availability, staffing, handoffs, workload intensity and fairness between roles before choosing a model. Call the arrangement compressed if weekly hours stay roughly the same; describe it as reduced-hours only when total weekly working time actually falls.
