Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy one participating digital game and play it on supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10 or 11 PCs, and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds without paying an extra Play Anywhere fee. It does not apply to every Xbox game or to physical discs, and the same game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple signed-in devices.
What Xbox Play Anywhere includes
For a participating title, one eligible digital purchase provides access on supported devices linked to the Microsoft account used for the game. Xbox says saves, achievements, and eligible game content carry across devices, so you can switch between a console and PC and continue with the same progress. Eligible content includes DLC such as add-ons, Season Passes, consumables, and in-game unlocks for a Play Anywhere game you own. Xbox’s Play Anywhere page describes the entitlement and its FAQ.
Supported platforms listed by Xbox are Xbox consoles, Windows 10 and 11 PCs, and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds. The page does not name specific handheld models, so check the device’s compatibility rather than assuming any portable gaming device qualifies.
Which games qualify
Play Anywhere is title-specific, not a feature of every Xbox game. Look for the Play Anywhere badge on the game’s Xbox Store or Windows Store listing, or check Xbox’s participating-games list. Confirm the badge on the specific game before buying; availability can vary by title.

Digital purchases qualify; discs do not
The entitlement applies to digital games, including digital codes from participating retailers. A physical disc purchase does not become cross-platform digital access through Play Anywhere. Before checkout, verify both that the title is marked Play Anywhere and that the purchase format is digital.
What it does not include
- Every Xbox game: only participating, badged titles qualify.
- Simultaneous play on multiple devices: Xbox says you cannot be signed into the same game at once on a console, PC, and/or supported handheld.
- Disc-to-digital access: physical disc ownership is not eligible for the digital entitlement.
- Universal handheld support: Xbox specifies supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds, not all handhelds or portable devices.
Play Anywhere is an entitlement for a digital game you own, not a blanket promise that every game in a subscription catalogue is included or streamable. Subscription and cloud-streaming access are separate questions; check the current terms for the specific game and service.

How to install and use a Play Anywhere game
- Check the listing: confirm the Play Anywhere badge on the Xbox or Windows Store page for the title.
- Buy digitally: purchase the game digitally or redeem a qualifying digital code, using the Microsoft account you intend to play with.
- Sign in on the device: use the Xbox Live/Microsoft account associated with the game. On Xbox console, find it in My Games & Apps under Ready to Install; on Windows PC, look in My Library.
- Check requirements: Xbox lists Windows 10 Anniversary Edition update or later for PC and says the latest console update should be installed. For handheld play, confirm the device is a supported Windows 11 gaming handheld.
Why older descriptions may say Xbox One and Windows 10
At launch, Xbox described Play Anywhere as covering Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. In a September 15, 2016 explainer, Xbox Wire Editor in Chief Will Tuttle wrote that a digital game bought through the Xbox or Windows Store could be played on both platforms at no additional cost (Xbox Wire’s launch-era FAQ). That wording reflects the platforms at the time; use Xbox’s current feature page for its present platform description.
