Start by finding which apps or processes are using memory in Task Manager. Close only the ones you recognize and do not need, check which apps launch at startup, then restart and see whether the same pattern returns. High memory use by itself does not prove your PC needs more RAM: the right fix depends on what is using it and whether your usual workload exceeds the computer’s capacity.
Find out what is using memory
- Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Check Processes: Select the Memory column to see which apps and processes are using the most RAM.
- Check Performance: Select Performance and then Memory to compare current use with the PC’s total memory.
Windows uses RAM to hold data for active apps. High use can reflect a memory-hungry app, many open programs or browser tabs, or a workload that regularly exceeds the PC’s capacity. Microsoft recommends monitoring resource use and checking heavy processes in its Windows performance guidance; Windows 11’s Task Manager and related system tools are described in Microsoft’s Task Manager instructions.
Do not end an unfamiliar process just because its name is unclear. Close programs you recognize and can safely reopen. If the same app repeatedly consumes unusually large amounts, update it or consult its publisher’s support information; a memory reading alone does not identify the cause.
Close unused apps and restart
Save your work, close apps and browser tabs you are not using, and check whether the PC becomes more responsive. If it remains slow, restart Windows and observe memory use during your normal workload. Microsoft recommends closing unused apps, restarting, and checking for Windows and optional driver updates as part of its performance troubleshooting advice.

- Settings: Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Task Manager: Task Manager > Startup apps.
Turn off only apps you do not need to launch when you sign in. Task Manager’s startup impact labels describe an app’s CPU and disk activity during startup; they are not a direct ranking of how much RAM it will use later. Microsoft documents these controls in its startup app configuration guidance. Re-enable an item if disabling it disrupts a function you rely on.
Review background app permissions where available
For apps that support the setting, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps > select the app > Advanced options. Background app permissions can limit activity when an app is not in use. Change this selectively: background activity may be needed for notifications or other expected functions. Microsoft’s performance guidance describes this option for supported apps.

Use clean boot or Safe Mode to isolate recurring problems
If high memory use returns after ordinary app and startup checks, diagnostic startup modes can help determine whether a third-party app, service, or driver is involved. They are ways to isolate a problem, not permanent fixes.
Clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services. Microsoft’s clean boot instructions use System Configuration and Task Manager and explain how to restore normal startup settings afterward. This is an advanced procedure: changing startup settings can temporarily remove functionality, and changing advanced boot options without guidance can make the computer unusable. If you are unsure about the steps, get help rather than experimenting.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential services and drivers. If the issue disappears there, that can help narrow the cause to something not loaded in Safe Mode; it does not identify the exact culprit on its own. See Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions and use the result as a diagnostic clue.

Microsoft describes RAM as a device’s short-term working memory: more memory can help a PC handle more simultaneous work without slowdowns. Its general workload recommendations are:

These are Microsoft’s general recommendations, not a diagnosis based on a particular Task Manager percentage. The retrieved Microsoft pages do not state a publication year for these figures. See Microsoft’s memory guidance.
Windows 11 lists 4 GB of RAM as its minimum system requirement. That minimum is not a promise of comfortable performance for every app or workload. Microsoft notes that some PCs below the requirement may have upgrade options; check the Windows 11 specifications and requirements and your manufacturer’s information.
Confirm compatibility before buying memory
RAM modules are not universal. Before purchasing, use the exact PC model’s manufacturer specifications or qualified assistance to confirm:
- the supported memory type and maximum capacity;
- the number of available memory slots; and
- whether the memory can be replaced or is soldered to the device.
The Microsoft requirements page does not establish compatibility for a specific PC or memory module. If the device cannot be upgraded, or you cannot confirm the details, ask the manufacturer or a repair professional before buying.

Older hardware may not improve much from software changes, and persistent high CPU, memory, or disk use can be a reason to consider whether a newer PC is appropriate. Microsoft discusses these limits in its performance guidance and advice on when to get a new PC. If a particular app is the repeat offender, more RAM may postpone slowdowns without fixing an app bug or memory leak. Consider service or replacement only after checking the pattern and the device’s upgrade options.
