Before installing or reinstalling Windows 11, back up files you cannot afford to lose, choose the installation path that fits your needs, and confirm you are reinstalling the edition your license covers. A digital license often means you can skip entering a product key; it does not make every installation choice data-safe or guarantee activation after a major hardware change.
What should you check before starting?
- Back up important files. Microsoft recommends copying them to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud storage such as OneDrive before reinstalling. Confirm the backup contains files you need; an option to keep files during setup is not a substitute for a backup. See Microsoft’s reinstall guidance.
- Check that the PC meets Windows 11 minimum requirements. Microsoft’s requirements include an approved processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and a storage device of at least 64 GB. Individual features and apps may require more, so meeting the minimum is an eligibility check, not a promise of comfortable performance. See Windows 11 system requirements.
- Know your edition and license situation. Plan to install the edition your existing license covers, and be ready to connect to the internet so Windows can activate online.
- If the drive is encrypted with BitLocker, save its recovery key. Microsoft advises keeping it available when using Reset this PC. See Microsoft’s Reset this PC guidance.
Which installation path fits your situation?
The right route depends on whether Windows starts, whether you need installed apps and settings, and whether you have a verified backup. These options do not preserve the same things.

Microsoft describes clean installation as an advanced option and warns: “A clean installation removes all of the following items:” personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Do not begin one until important files are backed up and accessible.
How do the “keep” choices work during an in-place reinstall?
If Windows is running, connect the installation media and launch setup.exe from it. Select Change what to keep to choose what Setup preserves. Microsoft documents three choices:

- Keep personal files and apps: preserves personal files, installed apps, and settings.
- Keep personal files only: preserves personal files and settings, but removes apps.
- Keep nothing: removes personal files, settings, and apps.
The keep choices apply to Setup launched from within Windows; they are not the same as booting from installation media for a clean install. Microsoft’s reinstall instructions describe the paths and their consequences.
What do you need to create Windows 11 installation media?
Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool workflow requires a reliable internet connection and a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating the media deletes the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything you need elsewhere first. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows 11 download and media-creation instructions.

If you are preparing a virtual machine, you can create an ISO instead of using a USB drive; an ISO can also be used to make DVD media. An embedded firmware product key may be applied automatically if it matches the Windows edition being installed.
Do you need a Windows 11 product key?
Not always. Microsoft defines a digital license—also called a digital entitlement in Windows 11—as an activation method that does not require entering a product key. A product key is a 25-character code. Which one applies depends on how Windows was obtained. See Microsoft’s activation guidance.

If Setup asks for a key during a reinstall and you have a digital license for the same edition on that device, Microsoft says you can skip the key; Windows should activate online after installation. If you bought Windows with a key, where to find it depends on the purchase channel: it may be on packaging, a Certificate of Authenticity, a purchase confirmation, a retailer’s digital locker, or a program portal. For a refurbished PC, Microsoft says the refurbisher must provide a product key.
Which edition should you install?
Install the edition that matches your license. A license for Windows 11 Home does not cover Windows 11 Pro: installing Pro on a Home-licensed device requires a valid Pro license. If Setup offers an edition choice, do not assume a different edition is covered just because the PC can install it. Why might Windows 11 fail to activate after installation?
A significant hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can stop Windows from finding the digital license associated with the device. Microsoft recommends linking your Microsoft account to the digital license before a hardware change; after the change, use the Activation troubleshooter to try to reactivate. The hardware-change reactivation instructions explain the recovery route.
Activation confirms that the product key or digital entitlement is valid for the device’s hardware configuration. Microsoft cautions that successful activation by itself does not guarantee that a copy of Windows is genuine. For other activation issues, consult Microsoft’s activation troubleshooting guidance.

Does upgrading to Windows 11 keep your files?
Microsoft says the default Windows 11 upgrade experience moves files and data to the new installation, and the device must meet Windows 11 minimum requirements. That describes the default upgrade flow; it should not be taken as a promise that a clean install will keep data. Check the choices presented by the route you are actually using, and back up first.
