If a Windows 11 update will not install, start by identifying whether it is a routine update, a feature upgrade, or Windows Setup. Back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and use the exact error code to decide whether to check connectivity, storage, drivers, or system components. Avoid a clean installation unless you intend to replace the existing Windows setup.
First identify what failed
“Windows 11 installation error” can describe several different problems, and the right fix depends on where the failure occurs. Note whether Windows Update is downloading or installing a routine update, offering a feature upgrade, Windows Setup is running from installation media, or the failure appears during restart.
Record the full error message and code. To see your Windows version, press Win + R, enter winver, and press Enter. Also note whether the PC is managed by work or school; organizational policies can affect which recovery and upgrade choices are available.
A feature upgrade may not be offered yet because of rollout timing, a compatibility issue, or unmet hardware requirements. Microsoft recommends waiting for an eligible Windows 11 upgrade to appear in Windows Update and checking the PC’s eligibility and on-screen message before using another installation method: Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance.

Protect your files, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Before making changes, back up important personal files—for example, by copying them to a USB drive or using another backup option. Microsoft’s guidance is available at Windows backup and restore.
- Open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- If needed, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Follow the troubleshooter’s prompts. Restart the PC if requested, then go to Windows Update and check again.
Microsoft’s general and error-specific steps are collected on its Windows Update troubleshooting page. If the troubleshooter does not fix the problem, use the recorded code and message to choose the next step rather than repeating the same attempt without a change.
Check the basics before retrying
- Power and connection: Keep the PC connected to power and use a stable internet connection, especially during a feature upgrade or repair reinstall.
- Free space: Check available storage. Low space can prevent an update or upgrade from completing.
- Account access: If a step requests elevation, use an account with administrator rights.
- Connected equipment: Disconnect nonessential external drives and docks while troubleshooting.
- Date and time: Make sure the system date and time are correct.
- Drivers: For an upgrade that fails during setup, check for relevant drivers from the device or component manufacturer.
After addressing anything that applies, retry Windows Update and restart if prompted. A PC can also be held back from a feature upgrade for compatibility or eligibility reasons; an installation tool is not a substitute for resolving such a block.

|---|---|---|
| Windows Update in Settings | Routine quality updates and feature upgrades offered to the PC. | Check the eligibility and compatibility message if an upgrade is not offered. |
| Windows Update Assistant | Manually installing the latest feature update on a compatible PC that has not received it automatically. | It does not run on ARM-based PCs. See Microsoft’s installation options. |
| Fix problems using Windows Update | Repairing Windows system files or components from Recovery. | Reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on Windows version and updates, and it may be unavailable on managed devices. |
| Installation media: in-place upgrade | Running Windows Setup from Microsoft installation media to upgrade an existing installation. | Follow Microsoft’s current media instructions and confirm eligibility first. |
| Fresh installation from media | Replacing the existing Windows installation. | This is materially different from troubleshooting an update and can replace the existing setup. Back up files and read Microsoft’s instructions before proceeding. |
Try the Windows Update repair reinstall when it is available
If Windows itself appears damaged and the option is offered, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery and select Fix problems using Windows Update. Follow the prompts; the PC needs power and an internet connection. Microsoft describes this as reinstalling the current version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on some older or unupdated systems, or on devices managed by an organization. See Microsoft’s Windows reinstallation guidance.
Use installation media only when the goal calls for it
Microsoft documents a USB flash drive as one way to carry Windows installation media, which can be used for an in-place upgrade or a fresh installation. Those are different operations: an in-place upgrade runs Setup against an existing installation, while a fresh installation can replace it. Verify eligibility and follow the current Windows 11 software download instructions. Microsoft also advises reading the notes before using its clean-install tool.

Microsoft classifies procedures such as resetting Windows Update folders and repairing system files with DISM and SFC as advanced. They require administrator permissions and are intended for people comfortable using the command line. Back up first, follow Microsoft’s official troubleshooting steps exactly, and do not apply a procedure merely because one code resembles your situation.
A clean installation is not the first fix for a failed quality update: it is a separate installation route that can replace the existing Windows setup. Use it only if that is your intended outcome, after backing up and checking Microsoft’s current instructions.
