Cursor and VS Code both offer AI suggestions, codebase questions, and agents that can work across files. Use inline suggestions for quick completions, chat for questions or small edits, and an agent when a task needs repository exploration, multiple changes, or checks. The useful comparison is not which editor is universally better, but which workflow and context fit the job.
Cursor and VS Code AI features at a glance
| Workflow | Cursor | VS Code | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggestions while typing | Cursor Tab uses recent edits, surrounding code, and linter errors to suggest code. It can offer multiple lines, imports, and coordinated edits across files. Cursor Tab documentation | GitHub Copilot provides ghost-text inline suggestions and next-edit suggestions. Its documentation says current and open files inform inline-suggestion context. VS Code inline suggestions documentation | Completing a line or block, drafting a familiar pattern, or considering a likely next edit. |
| Questions and focused edits | Ask is a read-only way to explore a codebase; Cursor also supports agent-assisted edits. Cursor Ask documentation | VS Code directs users to chat for codebase questions and inline chat or suggestions for focused edits. VS Code Copilot overview | Understanding a function, discussing an approach, or changing a small, clearly targeted section. |
| Multi-file work | Cursor Agent can search files and folders, edit files, run shell commands, and use browser tools. Cursor positions it for complex tasks and larger projects. Cursor Agent documentation | VS Code agents can find relevant code, make changes, and run checks. The workflow stays alongside the editor’s terminal, tests, and debugger; VS Code documents multiple agent harnesses. VS Code Copilot overview | Features, bug fixes, and refactors that cross files and need investigation. |
| Codebase context | Cursor Agent has codebase-search and file-reading tools. Cursor Agent documentation | Copilot agents search workspace files and may use semantic indexing. VS Code describes different index setup paths for GitHub repositories, Azure DevOps repositories, and other workspaces. For personal accounts, local workspace indexing is described as enabled; for organizations and enterprises, it is off by default. VS Code workspace context documentation | Questions whose answers depend on relationships across a repository. Check what is indexed and included in your workspace. |
Which workflow should you use?
Inline suggestions: quick, local drafting
Choose Cursor Tab or Copilot ghost text when you are already writing code and want a possible completion. Cursor documents multi-line and cross-file predictions; VS Code documents ghost text and next-edit suggestions. Treat either tool’s output as a draft: inspect it before accepting, especially when it affects behavior beyond the line you are editing.
Chat or Ask: understand before changing
Use a read-oriented question workflow to locate relevant code and explain how it works before you decide what to change. Cursor describes Ask as read-only codebase exploration. VS Code recommends chat for codebase questions. This is a good fit for orienting yourself in unfamiliar code or discussing an approach without handing off a broad implementation task.
Inline chat: make a bounded edit
When the desired change is small and its target is clear, use inline chat or another focused edit workflow. VS Code distinguishes focused edits from delegating an entire task. A narrow request—such as revising one selected function—makes it easier to judge whether the proposed change matches your intent.

Agents: delegate investigation and multi-file work
Use an agent when a task requires finding relevant code, changing multiple files, or running commands and checks. Cursor Agent and VS Code agents both document workflows that can explore and act across code. In VS Code’s description, an agent handling a task that spans files and tools can find relevant code, make changes, and run checks without requiring you to direct every search, edit, and test run. Review the resulting changes and verify them with appropriate tests or other checks; the fact that an agent can run checks does not establish that the result is correct.
How to compare codebase context
Do not assume the two products build or use repository context in identical ways. Cursor documents codebase-search and file-reading tools. VS Code documents workspace search and semantic indexing, with setup depending on repository type and account settings. If an answer seems to omit a relevant file, check the workspace’s indexing status and exclusions, and make sure the needed files are available to the workflow.
