How Scientists Study the Moon’s Subsurface Without Drilling

Scientists infer the Moon’s hidden structure by combining gravity and elevation maps, radar returns, seismic measurements and geological context—not by directly imaging the entire interior.

Scientists study the Moon’s hidden structure indirectly: orbiters map gravity and elevation, radar instruments analyze returned radio signals, and seismometers record vibrations. Researchers interpret those measurements with physical models and compare methods to narrow down what lies below. None provides a direct, complete image of the lunar interior.

What can reveal something beneath the lunar surface?

Each method measures a different signal. Gravity mapping detects variations in mass; radar records how transmitted radio energy returns; seismology measures ground motion caused by moonquakes and other events. Elevation and surface-composition maps provide geological context for interpreting those measurements.

The distinction matters: instruments collect observations, while scientists infer buried structure from them. A signal can constrain properties such as density or wave speed without uniquely identifying a particular rock or feature.

How gravity mapping reveals hidden mass

GRAIL measured changes in the Moon’s pull

NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission flew two spacecraft in formation. As lunar gravity varied along their paths, it altered the distance between the spacecraft; tracking those small changes let scientists map variations in the Moon’s gravity field. NASA Ames says the analysis used 7 million tracking observations to calculate precise spacecraft orbits and lunar geodetic characteristics. Gravity responds to mass, so an anomaly may reflect differences in density or the distribution of material beneath the surface. It does not, by itself, tell researchers exactly which rock type or buried structure caused the signal.

Why scientists compare gravity with elevation

The Moon’s uneven surface also affects gravity. To account for that contribution, scientists compare gravity measurements with elevation data from instruments such as the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). A Bouguer gravity map subtracts the gravity effect expected from surface relief; remaining anomalies can then be interpreted in relation to subsurface mass distribution. NASA Science: What We Study.

NASA describes GRAIL results as evidence that the lunar crust is less dense, more porous and more fractured than previously thought. It also reports an interpretation of gravity anomalies around Oceanus Procellarum as a rectangular pattern of lava-flooded rift valleys buried beneath the surface. These are interpretations of gravity and topographic evidence—not photographs of underground features. NASA Ames Research Center: GRAIL Gravity Maps; NASA Science: What We Study.

What radar contributes

Radar instruments transmit radio energy and analyze the returning signal. NASA identifies LRO’s Mini-RF as a radar technology demonstration used to image polar regions and search for water ice. That makes radar a different kind of evidence from gravity: it examines signal returns rather than inferring mass distribution from spacecraft tracking. NASA Astrobiology: LRO.

Those capabilities should not be mistaken for a universal underground camera. The cited NASA description does not establish a general penetration depth or show that radar sees through all lunar regolith. What researchers can infer depends on the instrument, the returned signals and how they are modeled.

How moonquakes help map the interior

Seismometers record ground motion

A seismometer measures vibrations at its location. Scientists analyze when seismic waves arrive and model the paths they may have taken through the Moon; wave behavior can then constrain properties such as seismic velocity and internal structure.

Apollo deployed four seismometers between 1969 and 1972, and the network operated until 1977. The stations were clustered on the near side, leaving sparse coverage of some near-surface wave paths. That limited footprint affects how confidently seismic observations alone can resolve structure across the Moon. NASA Technical Reports Server: “GRAIL Refinements to Lunar Seismic Structure” (2014 abstract).

Combining seismic and gravity evidence

Seismic and gravity measurements constrain different properties: seismic wave behavior bears on velocity, while gravity responds to mass distribution. A NASA-hosted technical abstract describes jointly interpreting Apollo seismic delays and GRAIL gravity data to constrain velocity and density with depth. Combining them can reduce ambiguity, but the result still depends on models and does not erase the gaps in the seismic network’s coverage. NASA Technical Reports Server: “GRAIL Refinements to Lunar Seismic Structure” (2014 abstract).

How surface maps provide geological context

LRO has mapped the lunar surface and measured temperature, composition and radiation environment. These observations help scientists interpret the geological setting of possible buried features and consider how they may continue below ground. Surface mapping provides context; it is not, by itself, a direct image of subsurface structure. NASA Science: Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

What each method can—and cannot—establish

Method What is measured What it can constrain Important limitation
Gravity mapping Changes in spacecraft motion or separation caused by variations in lunar gravity. Mass-distribution differences, especially when interpreted alongside elevation data. A gravity anomaly does not uniquely identify its cause; surface relief and hidden masses both matter.
Radar Returned radio signals from an instrument such as LRO’s Mini-RF. Polar-region imaging and water-ice searches, as described by NASA. The cited NASA source does not establish a general penetration depth.
Seismology Ground vibrations recorded by seismometers, including seismic arrival times. Wave velocities and internal structure inferred through modeled wave paths. Apollo’s four stations were clustered on the near side, leaving sparse near-surface ray coverage.
Elevation and surface context Surface height and mapped properties such as temperature, composition and radiation environment. Context for separating topographic effects and interpreting geological settings. Surface maps alone are not direct images of the subsurface.

NASA’s sources do not provide a common, quantified performance comparison across these methods, so their capabilities should not be reduced to a single depth or resolution ranking. Their value lies in the different constraints they offer and in comparing those constraints.

Why conclusions depend on combining evidence

Gravity can reveal mass variations but not their unique cause. Seismic waves provide information about the material they travel through, but Apollo’s station layout left gaps in coverage. Radar contributes returned-signal evidence, while elevation and surface maps help place anomalies in context. Researchers compare these observations and test models against them to narrow the range of plausible structures.

This is how scientists study the Moon without drilling: they measure distinct signals, account for known influences such as surface relief, and combine observations where their strengths complement one another. The result is an increasingly constrained interpretation of the subsurface, not a direct view of every layer.
