The distinction matters: the Mk1A contract sets out quantities, cost and delivery timing, while the February 2026 MRFA announcement does not establish a signed contract, quantity, price or schedule.
What is the main difference between Tejas Mk1A and MRFA?
Tejas Mk1A is a specific variant of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and a domestic production programme. MRFA means the Indian Air Force’s Multi Role Fighter Aircraft acquisition programme; the Ministry of Defence identified Rafale in its February 2026 AoN announcement. They are therefore not two names for the same aircraft or procurement.
Their announced procurement stages also differ. The government signed a production contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 97 Mk1A aircraft in September 2025. For MRFA, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) accorded an AoN in February 2026. AoN is an approval milestone, not evidence that a final supply contract has been signed.
What has been contracted for Tejas Mk1A?
On 25 September 2025, the Ministry of Defence announced a signed HAL contract for 97 LCA Mk1A aircraft for the IAF: 68 fighters and 29 twin-seaters. The announced cost was over ₹62,370 crore, excluding taxes. Deliveries are to begin in 2027–28 and conclude over six years. The Ministry’s contract announcement gives these figures.

The order is categorized as “Buy (India-IDDM)” under the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020. The Ministry said the aircraft would have over 64% indigenous content and include 67 additional items beyond those in the earlier Mk1A contract signed in January 2021. It specifically named the UTTAM Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, Swayam Raksha Kavach and control-surface actuators among the indigenous systems to be integrated.
The Department of Defence Production describes LCA Tejas as a 4.5-generation, all-weather, multirole fighter. That broad description is not a complete specification for every Mk1A aircraft. An earlier government release on the planned 83-aircraft Mk1A order discussed intended improvements to avionics, radar, weapons and air-to-air refuelling; it is programme history, not a full configuration list for the 2025 order. What has been announced for the IAF’s MRFA programme?
On 12 February 2026, the DAC accorded AoN for the IAF’s MRFA acquisition and named Rafale. The Ministry said the acquisition is intended to support air-dominance roles across the spectrum of conflict and long-range offensive strikes. It also said the majority of the aircraft to be procured would be manufactured in India. The Ministry’s AoN announcement does not specify a quantity, programme price, delivery dates, final manufacturing split or detailed aircraft configuration.
That means the announcement establishes formal progress and an Indian-manufacturing intent, but it should not be read as a completed purchase. “Majority manufactured in India” is not the same measure as the Mk1A order’s stated indigenous-content share: one describes where most aircraft are intended to be manufactured, while the other is a percentage of indigenous content.

Is MRFA for 114 aircraft, and is it the Navy’s Rafale deal?
A 114-aircraft figure appeared in December 2024 newspaper reporting reproduced in a DRDO-hosted clipping compilation. It is historical reporting, not a quantity confirmed by the February 2026 Ministry announcement, which does not state a number. The DRDO-hosted compilation reproduces that earlier coverage.
MRFA is also separate from the Navy’s Rafale-Marine purchase. India signed a distinct inter-governmental agreement with France on 28 April 2025 for 26 carrier-capable Rafale aircraft for the Navy, with training, simulators, weapons and support.
