What gets stored—and where—depends on separate controls for device location, Maps Timeline, Maps activity, and other Google Account history. Check each layer individually.
Four separate controls determine what Maps can access or save
| Layer | What it controls | Where data may be saved |
|---|---|---|
| Device location and app permission | Whether Maps can obtain your device’s location. Device location must be on and Maps must have permission. | Enabling access does not, by itself, mean every location signal is saved to account history. |
| Maps Timeline | Visits and routes associated with your device. | On eligible devices; an encrypted server backup is optional under Google’s current help guidance. |
| Maps activity and Search Services History | Account activity such as Maps searches, direction requests, viewed places, shared place links, and calls, when the applicable history setting is on. | Google Account activity. |
| Other Google activity and navigation processing | Other services and settings may retain location-related activity. Google also describes navigation data processed to provide and improve Maps. | It varies by activity and setting. Google says some navigation data is processed and then deleted without association to your account or device. |
Google says Timeline is off by default and requires opt-in. When it is on, precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline on eligible devices, including when Google apps are not being used. That is different from Maps activity history: Google lists searches, directions, place views, shared links, and calls as activity that may be saved when the relevant history control is enabled. Google Maps Timeline help and Maps activity help explain these distinctions.
Does Google Maps track you when you’re not using it?
If Timeline is enabled, Google says eligible signed-in devices regularly save precise location to Timeline even when Google apps are not in use. This describes Timeline’s location saving; it does not mean Maps records every movement in every account, or that Timeline is enabled by default.
Device location permission is a separate issue. It determines whether Maps can obtain your device’s location, while Timeline determines whether visits and routes are saved there. Other Google services or account settings may also retain location-related activity, so neither permission nor Timeline alone describes every kind of processing or saving.

What Maps activity can be saved?
When the applicable history setting is on, Google lists Maps searches, requests for directions, places viewed, shared place links, and calls as examples of account activity. These are interactions with Maps, not simply device-location pings. Saved Maps activity can help you revisit what you did, and Google says activity may also be used to tailor experiences, develop and improve services, or prevent fraud and abuse. Recommendations and ads depend on applicable personalization and ad settings; Google does not say every record is used for every purpose. Google’s location-data explanation describes its stated uses.
Navigation also involves processing that is not identical to saved account history. Google says some navigation data is collected to provide and improve Maps, processed, and then deleted without association to your Google Account or device. It also notes that some Maps activity—such as direction searches and ads shown while navigating—may be associated with the account. Google’s navigation-data guidance describes this distinction.

Personalized Maps AI features
Google says some AI-powered Maps features may use or collect location. When Personalized Recommendations is enabled, responses may draw on Maps searches and directions, saved lists and labels, reviews, ratings and photos, Search activity, and connected Google content apps. Feature availability and settings can vary, and Google warns that AI answers can be wrong. See Google’s Maps AI features help for current details.
Does turning off Timeline stop location tracking?
No. Turning off Timeline stops Timeline from saving new visits and routes, but it does not turn off device location, revoke Maps permission, or disable other Google location services and account-history settings. Similarly, deleting Timeline data does not necessarily delete location-related activity saved elsewhere. Review device permissions and the relevant Google Account history controls separately. Google’s location settings guidance covers related controls.

How to review or delete Maps location and activity data
- Review Timeline: Open Google Maps and go to your profile menu, then Timeline. Review, edit, or delete visits and routes, or turn Timeline off and check available auto-delete controls. Google’s current guidance says Timeline is stored on eligible devices, with optional encrypted server backup. If you want to delete Timeline data across devices, check each eligible device and any backup controls that apply. See Timeline help.
- Review Maps and account activity: Check Maps activity and Google Account My Activity or Search Services History/Web & App Activity controls. Setting names and menus can differ as Google rolls out updates. Deleting Maps activity does not necessarily delete Timeline visits, saved places, reviews, photos, or other history. See Maps activity help.
- Check device access: In your device’s settings, review Location and the Maps app permission. These controls determine whether Maps can access device location; they are separate from Timeline and account activity settings.
- Use Maps Incognito when appropriate: Google describes Incognito mode as an option for limiting Maps activity saved to your Google Account. It is not a control that blocks device location access or all processing. See Google Maps privacy settings.
Google says deletion begins by removing activity from view and systems, followed by a deletion process; limited business or legal retention may apply. Because Search services settings are being updated gradually, current account and app menus are more reliable than fixed screenshots or older instructions. Google Account activity controls provide additional guidance.
What happens when Maps identifies a particularly personal place?
Google says visits to places it identifies as particularly personal are removed from Timeline soon after identification. Its examples include counselling centres, domestic violence shelters, abortion clinics, fertility centres, addiction treatment facilities, weight-loss clinics, and cosmetic-surgery clinics. Google says it usually identifies such places automatically using information from businesses, websites, and users, with some manual designation, and cautions that classifications may be out of date. This protection is specifically about Timeline: searches, interactions, or photos related to a place could still be saved under other settings. See Google’s sensitive-place guidance.
Why your settings may look different
Google says Search services settings are being updated gradually, so names and menus may vary by account or app version. Timeline is also device-based for eligible devices, with optional encrypted server backup. Check the current controls on the device and in the Google Account you use rather than assuming one switch covers all devices and services.
