Continuous data protection can help reduce how much data is lost between recovery points, but it is only one part of a disaster- and cyber-recovery plan.
What IDC’s study found—and who it surveyed
IDC’s white paper, The State of Disaster Recovery and Cyber-Recovery, 2024–2025: Factoring in AI (IDC #US52445524), reports findings from a February 2024 survey sponsored by Zerto and published in August 2024. The worldwide survey included 504 respondents from organizations with 500 to more than 10,000 employees, spanning 18 industries; no industry accounted for more than 9% of respondents. These figures describe that survey, not all businesses.
- Respondents reported an average of 4.2 data-related business disruptions in the preceding 12 months. IDC’s survey question counted disruptions involving loss of access to at least one application, including cyber-related events such as ransomware. IDC survey methodology and disruption finding.
- 49% cited lost employee productivity as a consequence of disruptions, and 29% cited direct revenue loss. These are respondent-reported consequences, not universal business rates. IDC survey findings on disruption consequences.
- 36% said they had coordinated disaster-recovery and cyber-recovery plans. IDC links coordinated planning with less spending on technology purchases and training and faster recoveries; the report describes an association, not proof that coordination caused those outcomes. IDC findings on coordinated DR and CR plans.
The results make a case for planning recovery around business impact, but they are not a 2026 industry snapshot: the survey was conducted in February 2024.
What continuous data protection changes
Recovery planning balances three concerns: whether data survives, how quickly systems can be restored, and how precisely the organization can choose a recovery point. Continuous data protection (CDP) records changes at a finer time granularity than less frequent recovery points may allow. IDC describes CDP as a way to target recovery point objectives measured in seconds, potentially reducing the amount of data lost between recovery points. Actual results depend on the system and its configuration; the report does not establish that every product or workload can achieve a seconds-level RPO.
RPO, or recovery point objective, is the amount of data loss an organization is willing to accept, expressed as time. RTO, or recovery time objective, is how long the organization can tolerate before service is restored. IDC says availability service-level agreements and these objectives are becoming shorter and stricter. They should be set from the business requirements of each application, not chosen solely because a technology advertises a particular interval. IDC’s report on DR, CR, and recovery objectives.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why CDP and backup do not replace a recovery plan
Backup and recovery are foundational, but IDC warns that backup/recovery alone may not meet the broader needs of disaster recovery (DR) or cyber-recovery (CR). The report states: “B/R alone is insufficient for disaster recovery (DR) or cyber-recovery (CR).”
Disaster recovery involves more than restoring data
DR may require moving applications and data to a second site. That can involve asynchronous or synchronous replication, replicated infrastructure, application failover and failback, and operational runbooks. CDP can improve the choice of recovery point; it does not, by itself, provide the destination capacity, application sequencing, or operating procedures needed to resume service.

Cyber-recovery must account for compromised data
A cyber incident can leave replicated or backed-up data compromised. IDC identifies malware detection, forensic analysis, and cleanroom recovery as additional CR needs. A clean recovery environment helps teams assess and restore systems without simply bringing suspected threats back into production. CDP does not substitute for detection, integrity checks, incident response, or tested procedures.

| Evaluation area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Recovery objectives | Define RPO and RTO for each workload, then validate achievable results under the organization’s conditions. |
| Recovery granularity and integrity | Check how precisely recovery points can be selected and how restored data is checked for integrity. |
| Workload and environment coverage | Confirm support for the required applications and hybrid or multicloud environments. |
| Failover and failback | Establish how applications move to recovery infrastructure and how they return to normal operations. |
| Cyber-recovery | Determine whether malware detection, forensic analysis, and cleanroom recovery fit the organization’s threat-response process. |
| Operations and cost | Account for implementation, training, ongoing operational complexity, and the cost of the full recovery design—not only data protection. |
Before choosing a design, map the application dependencies and recovery sequence, identify who makes recovery decisions, and test whether the documented steps meet the target RPO and RTO. A recovery point is useful only if the organization can restore it reliably and bring the affected service back into operation.

IDC’s survey shows that respondents encountered data-related disruptions and reported productivity and revenue consequences. Its analysis supports treating continuous protection as one way to improve recovery-point granularity, while coordinating it with the infrastructure, application processes, integrity checks, and response procedures required for DR and CR. It does not show that CDP alone prevents disruption, guarantees seconds-level recovery, or delivers the same results for every organization.
