Yes. If Memory features are available on your account and enabled, ChatGPT can use saved memories and relevant information from past chats to personalize later conversations. It does not remember every detail or preserve a complete record as memory. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ explains how these controls work and why availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
How can ChatGPT remember past conversations?
ChatGPT’s cross-chat personalization can draw on two separate kinds of information: saved memories and reference chat history. They work differently, and neither is a guarantee that ChatGPT will recall every detail you have discussed.
Saved memories
Saved memories are details ChatGPT stores as useful context, or details you explicitly ask it to remember. They are stored separately from the conversation where they came up. As a result, deleting that conversation alone may not remove its saved memory. OpenAI describes the controls in its Memory FAQ.
Reference chat history
When this feature is available and enabled, ChatGPT can use relevant information from past conversations to tailor future replies. It does not retain every detail. Information drawn from chat history can also change over time as ChatGPT updates what it considers useful.

Custom Instructions are different
Custom Instructions are guidance you provide about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond. They are distinct from information ChatGPT learns or saves through conversations.
How do you check or change ChatGPT Memory settings?
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. The exact controls and labels vary. You may see options such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
- Review the memory summary or saved-memory controls if they are available. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers. A summary is a high-level view and may not show every source or detail used.
- To remove information, check each place it may be stored: saved memories, the original or archived chat, Library files, and connected apps where relevant. Removing one location may not remove copies or related information elsewhere.
OpenAI’s Memory FAQ covers account controls and deletion. If a control is missing or named differently, feature availability may differ for your plan, region, platform, or workspace.

How do you turn off ChatGPT Memory?
Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory and switch off the relevant control available on your account. Saved-memory and chat-history controls are separate, so check which one you want to disable.
Turning off Reference chat history schedules deletion of information ChatGPT remembered from past chats within 30 days, according to OpenAI. It does not delete the original conversations; delete those separately if you want them removed from chat history. Turning off Reference chat history also does not delete saved memories. See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Does Temporary Chat use Memory?
Temporary Chat does not create or update memories while the conversation is temporary. A personalized Temporary Chat can still use existing memories. If you want a Temporary Chat that does not use existing memories or Custom Instructions, choose the non-personalized Temporary Chat option when available. OpenAI explains these distinctions in its Temporary Chat FAQ.
Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history. OpenAI says they may nevertheless be retained for safety purposes for up to 30 days. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat governed by your account settings.
Is ChatGPT Memory the same as model training?
No. Memory personalizes responses; the Improve the model for everyone setting controls whether content from personal ChatGPT accounts may be used to improve models. To change that preference, open Settings > Data controls. Turning model improvement off does not hide or delete saved chats. OpenAI explains the distinction in its Data Controls FAQ.
