Neither protocol automatically encrypts traffic, hides DNS lookups, makes you anonymous, or guarantees better speed. The right option depends on the application, the proxy implementation, and how you configure the connection.
What is the difference between an HTTP proxy and SOCKS5?
An HTTP proxy speaks HTTP, so it can understand HTTP requests and apply HTTP-level rules or handling if configured to do so. A SOCKS5 proxy negotiates a relay to a destination host and port without needing to interpret whether the relayed data is HTTP or another application protocol.
“Proxy” is the broad category; this comparison is between an HTTP proxy and a proxy that implements SOCKS version 5. SOCKS5 is defined in RFC 1928. HTTP semantics and proxy behavior are described in RFC 9110.
| Decision | HTTP proxy | SOCKS5 proxy |
|---|---|---|
| What it handles | HTTP requests; configuration may allow HTTP-specific policy or handling. | Relays application data without interpreting its protocol. |
| Typical fit | Web browsing, HTTP APIs, or policies that depend on HTTP semantics. | Applications needing a general TCP relay, or selected UDP traffic when supported. |
| HTTPS websites | Can use CONNECT to establish a tunnel; TLS is negotiated with the destination through it. | Can relay the TCP connection; TLS remains between the client and destination. |
| UDP | Not the usual HTTP proxy use case. | RFC 1928 defines UDP ASSOCIATE; both client and proxy must implement the needed support. |
| DNS resolution | Depends on the client, target form, and proxy implementation. | A domain name can be sent, but proxy-side resolution depends on client behavior and configuration. |
| Encryption | The HTTP proxy protocol alone does not encrypt traffic. | SOCKS5 alone does not encrypt traffic. |
| Speed | No general speed advantage is established. | No general speed advantage is established. |
How HTTPS and proxy encryption differ
An HTTPS website protects the client-to-destination connection with TLS. When an HTTP proxy is used for an HTTPS site, the client can send CONNECT to ask the proxy to establish a tunnel; TLS is then negotiated with the destination through that tunnel. This does not mean the separate client-to-proxy connection is itself encrypted.

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
SOCKS5 can relay the TCP connection used by TLS, but SOCKS5 is not the encryption layer. To protect a connection to the proxy itself, check whether the client and provider support a TLS-protected proxy endpoint or use another appropriate encrypted tunnel. The required protection depends on which network hop and data your threat model covers.
Neither proxy type guarantees anonymity. A proxy operator may see connection metadata, and plaintext HTTP content may be readable by intermediaries. RFC 1928 notes that SOCKS security depends on the authentication and encapsulation methods supported by a particular implementation and selected during negotiation.

Which proxy should you choose for your use case?
Web browsing, websites, and HTTP APIs
An HTTP proxy is a natural fit when your browser or API client supports it and you need HTTP-aware rules, logging, or integration. For HTTPS sites, check that CONNECT is permitted. Whether the proxy applies HTTP-specific handling depends on its configuration; the protocol alone does not mean it filters, caches, or modifies requests.
Applications that do not use HTTP
Consider SOCKS5 when an application needs a general TCP relay and supports SOCKS5 directly, or can be routed through a compatible client. SOCKS5’s broader relay behavior does not make an application use the proxy automatically. Confirm the exact application’s settings and test that its traffic follows the intended route.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
UDP workloads
SOCKS5 is the relevant option in this comparison if the application requires UDP, because RFC 1928 defines the UDP ASSOCIATE request. The capability is not a guarantee of support in every product: verify that both the client and proxy implement it and that the application can use that path.
DNS privacy or location-sensitive resolution
Check where the hostname is resolved rather than assuming DNS follows the proxied connection. Some clients offer a mode such as socks5h that sends the hostname for resolution at the proxy, but this is client-specific. Confirm actual client behavior and configuration if DNS location or privacy matters.

Performance comparisons
There is no universal speed winner based on the protocol name. Latency and reliability depend on the endpoint, network route, client, destination, and traffic. For a meaningful comparison, measure the same workload with each configuration that your application supports.

- Identify the application and protocol. Check whether the application itself supports HTTP proxying, SOCKS5, or both.
- Decide whether HTTP-aware handling matters. If you need policy or handling based on HTTP semantics, an HTTP proxy may be the better fit.
- Check for UDP requirements. If the application needs UDP, verify SOCKS5 support at both ends rather than relying on the protocol label.
- Choose where DNS should resolve. Check the client’s documented behavior and settings; do not infer DNS routing from the proxy type alone.
- Review security and authentication. Confirm the authentication methods and any encrypted proxy hop supported by the specific client and provider.
- Test the actual setup. Check application compatibility, connection reliability, and latency with the endpoint and workload you intend to use.
What the protocol names do—and do not—tell you
They describe how a client communicates with an intermediary, not the full privacy or security properties of a connection. Actual DNS behavior, authentication, UDP support, and protection of the client-to-proxy hop vary by implementation. Check the documentation for the particular client and proxy service before relying on a feature.
