A laptop audio driver is software that lets Windows communicate with audio devices; an audio codec is either a hardware component in the audio system or software support for a media format. They are different layers, so the right fix depends on which meaning of “codec” applies and what is failing.
What an audio driver does
A Windows audio driver connects the operating system’s audio stack to devices used for playback and recording. That can include built-in speakers and microphones as well as headsets, USB audio devices, Bluetooth audio and HDMI audio. The driver is software; it is not a chip or a file format. Microsoft’s Windows audio architecture overview describes the driver’s role in that stack.
What “audio codec” can mean
“Codec” is used for two different things in audio. In laptop hardware documentation, it can mean a component connected to an audio controller. In media playback, it means a format’s encoding or decoding support. These meanings are not interchangeable.
Hardware audio codec
In the Intel High Definition Audio context, Microsoft describes an audio codec as an integrated adapter connected to an HD Audio controller. The component handles audio hardware functions; a driver enables Windows to use the device. They interact, but the codec is hardware and the driver is software. Implementation details vary by computer. Microsoft’s HD Audio codec documentation explains this hardware use of the term.

Media codec
A media codec encodes or decodes a format such as MP3, FLAC or AC-3. Windows, individual apps and device makers may provide support for different formats. For example, Microsoft’s supported-codecs information says AC-3 is no longer included with Windows beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, though many device manufacturers may preinstall it. That is a media-format availability issue, not a laptop’s hardware audio codec. Microsoft’s supported-codecs table gives the Windows-specific details.

How to choose the right troubleshooting path
If sound devices are missing or audio will not play or record
Start with the driver and device path. Microsoft recommends checking Windows Update for audio driver updates on Windows 10 and Windows 11, then restarting after an update. If Windows does not find a newer driver, Microsoft says: “If Windows doesn’t find a new driver, look for one on the device manufacturer’s website and follow those instructions.” Use the support page for the laptop’s exact model rather than installing a package intended for a different device. If updating does not solve the problem, Microsoft also documents uninstalling and reinstalling an audio driver and, in some cases, trying the generic driver included with Windows. A generic driver may not retain every manufacturer-specific feature, so use it as a troubleshooting option rather than assuming it is an equivalent replacement.
If one file or format will not play
Check the file format and the app first. The audio hardware and driver may work normally while the player lacks support for that format. For Windows 11, version 24H2, check AC-3 availability specifically because it is not included by default according to Microsoft, although a PC maker may have preinstalled it. Microsoft’s Windows feature-removal notes identify the version-specific change.

If the built-in audio jack or hardware appears faulty
A USB audio adapter can provide another audio path because Windows supports USB audio hardware. It is a conditional workaround if integrated hardware or a jack has failed; buying one does not repair a missing or incorrect driver, nor does it add support for an unsupported media format. Check that the adapter fits the laptop’s available ports and the intended headphones, microphone or speakers before choosing one. These troubleshooting steps are scoped to Windows. Available drivers and manufacturer-specific packages can differ by laptop model and Windows version. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14; anyone still using it should factor that support status into broader operating-system maintenance.
