SQL injection targets how a database interprets a query; prompt injection targets how an AI system interprets instructions and content. Both involve untrusted input crossing into a higher-trust context, but they work differently and need different defenses.
How the two attacks work
SQL injection changes a database query
SQL injection occurs when an application incorporates untrusted input into a database query so that the input can change the query’s syntax or intent. NIST describes SQL injection as attacks seeking websites that pass insufficiently processed user input to database back ends (NIST glossary).
A common flaw is building a dynamic SQL statement by concatenating user input into a string. If the database parses that input as SQL syntax rather than as a value, the query can behave differently from what the application intended. OWASP’s SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet identifies this pattern and recommends keeping query code separate from data.
Prompt injection changes how an AI handles instructions and content
Prompt injection occurs when malicious or untrusted text in an AI application’s context influences how the model follows instructions or handles its task. NIST defines it as “An attack which exploits the concatenation of untrusted input with a prompt constructed by a higher-trust party such as the application designer” (NIST AI 100-2e2025 glossary).

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AI applications may combine instructions from the user and application designer with outside content the model is asked to read. OWASP notes that many large language models process natural-language instructions and data together without a clear separation (OWASP LLM Prompt Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet). The injection can be direct, in a user’s prompt, or indirect, embedded in material such as a webpage, document, or email the system retrieves or reads (Microsoft’s prompt-shields overview).
SQL injection vs. prompt injection at a glance
| Comparison | SQL injection | Prompt injection |
|---|---|---|
| What it targets | How a database interprets a query (NIST; OWASP). | How an AI model or agent interprets instructions and content (NIST; OWASP). |
| Typical entry point | Untrusted input added to a dynamic database query. | User text or external content included in the AI’s context, such as a webpage, file, or email (Microsoft). |
| Possible failure | Changed query structure or intent may expose or modify data. | Manipulated model behavior may affect data access or actions when the AI application has connected tools or permissions (OWASP). |
| Main defensive approach | Use parameterized queries or prepared statements; allow-list structural choices that cannot be bound as values (OWASP). | Keep untrusted content segregated, limit permissions and tools, review consequential actions, and test adversarially (OWASP; OpenAI agent safety guidance). |
How to defend against SQL injection
Bind values instead of building SQL with strings
Use prepared statements with variable binding so the database treats supplied values as data, not as query code. OWASP recommends this as the primary defense. Safely constructed stored procedures may also be appropriate.

Allow-list query structure that cannot be parameterized
Parameters work for values, but not ordinarily for structural choices such as a table name, column name, or sort direction. Prefer choosing those elements in application code. If the user must choose, map the selection to a fixed set of expected options rather than inserting arbitrary text into the query.
OWASP discourages escaping all user input as the general primary defense: escaping is fragile and database-specific.

How to reduce prompt-injection risk
Keep untrusted content outside the instruction boundary
Make it clear to the system which content is external data and which instructions come from the application. Segregating and labeling external content helps address the design problem, but should not be treated as a guarantee that a model will always distinguish data from commands.
Limit what the AI can do
Give an AI agent only the data, backend access, and tools needed for its task. Avoid broad permissions or open-ended authority. OpenAI’s agent safety guidance recommends limiting agent access, providing specific instructions, and reviewing consequential actions before confirming them.

Put approval and checks around consequential actions
Require human review before privileged or consequential operations, and screen proposed actions against the application’s rules. Test the system with adversarial inputs, including indirect instructions in content it may retrieve. OWASP cautions that there is “no fool-proof prevention within the LLM”; its guidance focuses on mitigating impact through layered controls (OWASP LLM01: Prompt Injection).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are they the same kind of vulnerability?
No. Calling prompt injection “SQL injection for AI” captures only a limited similarity: both concern untrusted material influencing a higher-trust process. SQL injection relies on a database interpreting input as query syntax. Prompt injection exploits how an AI interprets natural-language instructions and data, even when no conventional code parser is involved. Its consequences depend on what data and tools the AI application can access.
