There is no single best preset for streaming PC games to every Android handheld. Start with a stable network, a stream resolution your device and host can handle, and a frame-rate target the host can sustain; then use the client’s performance indicators to adjust one setting at a time. The settings below apply to Moonlight and Steam Link, with some features depending on your handheld, host PC, Android version, and network.
Start with a stable connection
For local streaming, Moonlight recommends connecting the Android device over a good 5 GHz Wi-Fi network and wiring the host PC to the router over Ethernet when practical. Its project listing also recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router. Those are starting points, not guarantees: a stable connection matters more than the Wi-Fi label alone.
If the stream stutters or latency varies, try moving closer to the access point and reducing competing network traffic before changing several stream settings at once. The cited guidance does not establish a universally correct distance or Wi-Fi channel. A new router is only worth considering if your existing network cannot provide a stable connection where you play.
Choose resolution and frame rate together
Resolution
In Moonlight or Steam Link, begin with a resolution that looks clear on the handheld and that the host can render comfortably. The handheld’s native resolution is not automatically the best stream resolution: host output, decoder capacity, frame rate, and network conditions all affect the result. Moonlight’s setup guide notes that matching stream resolution to the host display can avoid HDR scaling artifacts. If that match is impractical, tune while watching the stream and the client’s performance indicators.

Frame rate and display refresh
Choose a stream frame-rate target the host can maintain and the handheld can present smoothly. If Android exposes a display refresh-rate control, try a mode aligned with the target where practical. Google advises matching a high-refresh display to the target frame rate when possible, while noting that higher refresh rates use more power (Android power-efficiency guidance).
Do not assume a requested rate is always applied. Google’s refresh-rate guidance says games default to 60 Hz on Android 15, and higher-rate requests can be constrained by factors including battery and temperature. This describes Android platform and game behavior; it does not guarantee how a particular handheld or streaming client will behave.

Set bitrate to what the connection can sustain
Start conservatively, then raise the bitrate only while the image remains stable and latency does not increase. A higher bitrate can improve image detail when the connection, host, and decoder can handle it, but it is not a quality upgrade if it introduces jitter or delay.
Moonlight’s FAQ says latency can rise when bitrate exceeds what the connection supports and recommends lowering bitrate when jitter is high. There is no bitrate figure that is best for all handhelds: resolution, frame rate, decoder capability, and actual network quality all matter.

Leave HDR off unless the full setup supports it
HDR is optional, not a general fix for poor image quality. Moonlight lists Android 7.0 or later, an HEVC Main10 hardware decoder, and an HDR10-capable client display as requirements for Android HDR. For Sunshine streaming, its setup guide requires a Windows host with a GPU that supports HEVC Main10 encoding and an HDR-capable display or EDID emulator.
Even with compatible hardware, resolution mismatch can cause HDR scaling artifacts, so matching the stream resolution to the host display may help. Moonlight’s Android listing says it supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1; AV1 requires Sunshine and a compatible host GPU. Codec availability alone does not show which option will work best on a particular handheld.

Check controller behavior on the exact device
Moonlight supports standard Android-mapped gamepads and lists support for several other controllers. Test the specific handheld and controller combination you plan to use: the setup guide warns that some controllers can have latency or disconnections, especially some PlayStation controllers connected over Bluetooth.

Turn on Moonlight’s Android performance overlay and use its readings as diagnostic clues, not as a complete measurement of end-to-end latency. Moonlight notes that some metrics may be unavailable on some clients and that system, display, or input latency may not be measured.

- Stutter or variable latency: Lower bitrate first, then check whether the Wi-Fi connection is stable. Moonlight specifically links excessive bitrate with increased latency and recommends reducing it when jitter is high.
- Low or uneven frame rate: Check whether the host can maintain the selected frame-rate target. If not, lower the target or choose a resolution the host can render more comfortably.
- Soft or scaled-looking image: Reassess stream resolution against the handheld display and host output. For HDR, Moonlight documents scaling artifacts when stream and host-display resolutions differ.
- Controller lag or dropouts: Test the controller connection independently and compare another supported controller or connection method if available.
Steam Link also provides advanced resolution and bandwidth limits, and lets you adjust streaming settings from its overlay. Valve’s suggested network settings are a starting point; make live changes cautiously so you can tell which adjustment helped.
Moonlight or Steam Link?
Both are viable ways to stream PC games to an Android handheld, but the documented details differ. Moonlight’s project materials describe its host options, codecs, HDR requirements, controller considerations, and performance overlay. Valve’s cited support page describes resolution and bandwidth limits and live adjustment through the Steam Link overlay. The documented feature information does not establish that one client is faster or produces a better picture on every device.
