Stable is Android’s production release for everyday use; a beta is pre-release software for early access and testing; and a QPR is a follow-up release that brings fixes and refinements after a platform launch. These labels describe different things: “QPR” is an update train, while “beta” tells you that a build is still in testing. A QPR beta is therefore a pre-release build of a QPR—not a separate kind of stable Android release.
How stable, beta and QPR updates differ
| Update type | What it means | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Stable release | The final platform release, published to AOSP and then delivered to supported devices by their manufacturers. | People who want normal use and predictable support. |
| Major-version beta | A pre-release build of an upcoming Android platform release. Early builds may include changing APIs or app-facing behavior. | Early adopters and developers preparing apps for the next release. |
| QPR | A Quarterly Platform Release that builds on a launched Android version with fixes and improvements. | People receiving a follow-up platform update through their device’s normal channel. |
| QPR beta | A pre-release build of a forthcoming QPR. It remains beta software even though it is testing a refinement to an already-launched Android version. | Eligible Pixel users and developers who want to test QPR changes early. |
Google describes QPRs as quarterly updates delivered to AOSP and Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops. The current Android 17 QPR1 release notes describe that release cycle; schedules and build dates vary by cycle, so a specific beta date should not be treated as a standing Android-wide schedule.
What stable means—and why updates arrive at different times
Google’s final platform release goes to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and the wider ecosystem. Device makers then prepare and distribute updates for their own supported phones, on their own schedules. A platform release date is not a promise that every Android phone will receive the update that day; timing and availability depend on the manufacturer and device. See Google’s Android version documentation for platform release information.
What changes in a beta, and when APIs are final
Android betas let enrolled users and developers try an upcoming major or minor platform release before its final launch. Beta 1 is the first beta-quality build; later betas are incremental. In earlier beta stages, APIs and app-facing behavior may still change, so developers should test their apps and watch for compatibility issues.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

The milestone called Platform Stability is the point at which Google says the platform has reached “final internal and external APIs, final app-facing behaviors, and final non-SDK API lists.” Developers should use that milestone for final compatibility work rather than assuming that an early beta reflects the finished platform. Google explains the milestones in its Android 17 overview.
What QPRs change—and what a QPR beta is for
QPRs follow the initial release of an Android version and bring fixes and improvements. Google says the current cycle’s QPRs do not include app-impacting API changes, but developers can still test beta builds for possible effects on user experience. That makes a QPR beta useful for checking how an app behaves with refinements to the platform, even when the public API surface is not expected to change.

Google describes QPR beta builds as suitable for general use, unlike betas for unreleased major Android versions. That description is not a guarantee that a beta is bug-free or the right choice for every phone or user. Treat it as pre-release software and review the release’s known issues before installing.
Which update channel should you choose?
Stay on stable for your everyday phone
Choose the manufacturer’s normal stable updates if reliability and predictable device support matter most. This keeps you on the production release rather than asking you to accept the risks of pre-release testing.

Choose a major-version beta for early access or app preparation
An eligible Pixel owner can enroll in Android Beta for Pixel to receive beta updates over the program’s release cycle. Developers can use early betas to discover behavior changes, then complete final compatibility checks at Platform Stability.
Choose a QPR beta to test an upcoming refinement
A QPR beta is relevant if you want to try a forthcoming Pixel platform refinement early or validate an app’s user experience against it. It is still beta software, so it is a less conservative choice than waiting for the stable QPR.

How Android Beta for Pixel enrollment and opting out work
Android Beta for Pixel is limited to supported Pixel devices. Enrollment delivers OTA beta updates for the program’s release cycle, including QPR betas. Check Google’s live Android Beta for Pixel page for device eligibility and current instructions, and back up your data before enrolling.
Google says a user who applies a stable release update can opt out of future beta updates without a data wipe during a limited window. That window ends when the user applies the next beta update. Check the program’s current opt-out instructions before acting; leaving the program at another point can have different data consequences.

How often Pixel beta participants can expect a stable release
Google’s current Android Beta for Pixel guidance describes a cycle with four stable public releases: the official platform release followed by three QPRs. This is the cadence of the described Pixel program cycle, not a guarantee for every Android manufacturer or a universal update schedule for all devices. Manufacturers set their own rollout timing for supported phones.
