Clean a removable retainer at least once a day. Rinse it whenever you take it out, then gently brush it with a dedicated soft-bristled toothbrush and the cleanser recommended for your appliance. A fixed retainer needs daily cleaning around its wire. Your orthodontist’s instructions take priority because cleaners that suit one retainer may damage another.
How often to clean each type of retainer
| Retainer type | Daily care | Optional deeper clean | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Removable clear plastic or Hawley (wire and acrylic) | Rinse when removed and gently brush at least once a day. | The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) suggests a tablet or solution soak for 10–20 minutes once a week, if the product is compatible with the retainer. | Follow the orthodontist’s product instructions; a removable retainer can be taken out for cleaning. |
| Bonded or fixed wire | Brush around the wire and clean between the teeth with floss, a floss threader, or an interdental brush. | Not applicable: the wire stays attached and cannot be removed for soaking. | Clean around the wire as part of your daily oral-care routine. |
AAO’s June 2025 retainer-cleaning guide recommends rinsing removable retainers after removal and brushing them daily. Cleveland Clinic also recommends daily cleaning in its retainer guidance. Neither source establishes a cleaning frequency that replaces your treating orthodontist’s instructions.
How to clean a removable retainer
- Rinse it when you take it out. Use lukewarm water to wash away saliva and loose debris. Avoid hot water, which can distort or melt plastic.
- Brush gently every day. Use a dedicated or soft-bristled toothbrush and the cleanser specified for your retainer. AAO’s June 2025 guide recommends dish soap and advises against toothpaste. Cleveland Clinic describes antibacterial soap and water and cautions that some toothpastes may be too harsh. Because guidance differs, use your orthodontist’s directions rather than treating any cleanser as universally safe.
- Consider a weekly soak only if approved. AAO suggests soaking in a retainer-cleaning tablet or solution for 10–20 minutes once a week. Check the product label and confirm with your orthodontist that it is suitable for your appliance. Soaking supplements daily brushing; it does not replace it.
- Store it in a protective case when it is out. This helps keep it from being misplaced or exposed to dirt.
For the basic rinse-and-brush routine, see the AAO’s care instructions for removable retainers and Cleveland Clinic’s retainer-care advice.
How to clean a fixed retainer
A bonded wire cannot be taken out for brushing or soaking. Brush carefully around and under the wire, then clean between the teeth using floss, a floss threader, or an interdental brush. AAO’s retainer-cleaning guide includes floss threaders among the options for cleaning around a fixed retainer; its retainer FAQ also recommends cleaning between teeth with floss or an interdental brush.

What not to use on a retainer
Do not assume a cleaner is safe just because it is used for teeth or other dental appliances. AAO warns against abrasive toothpaste, bleach, alcohol-based mouthwash, strong detergents, and hot water. Harsh or abrasive products can damage or discolor a retainer, while heat can warp plastic. Other clinical instructions may differ, so ask your orthodontist before using a denture cleanser, mouthwash, or specialty cleaning product.
When to contact your orthodontist
Contact your orthodontist if odor or discoloration persists despite regular cleaning, if the appliance irritates your mouth, or if it cracks, warps, feels unusually snug, or no longer fits normally. A loose wire on a fixed retainer also needs professional attention. AAO advises stopping use of a cracked, warped, or loose-wire retainer until it has been evaluated; Cleveland Clinic recommends prompt contact if a retainer is broken, lost, too snug, or no longer fits.
