Check the browser’s OPTIONS preflight and the actual request separately: the browser may stop the actual request before it is sent, or it may receive a response but refuse to expose it to React. The fix depends on which happened.
Start with the browser evidence
- Open your browser’s developer tools before reproducing the request. Read the Console message, including messages such as “Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at [some site]. (Reason: additional information here).”
- In the Network panel, locate the request to the API. Record its URL, the page’s origin, method, requested headers, status, redirects, and response headers.
- Check whether an
OPTIONSrequest appears. If it does, inspect that request’s result first; then inspect the actual API request separately, if the browser sent it.
JavaScript generally does not receive the browser’s detailed explanation for a CORS failure. The Console and Network panels provide the useful evidence. A CORS message alone does not prove that the API returned a 4xx: a rejected preflight can prevent the actual request, while a missing or invalid CORS response header can hide a response that the server did return. See MDN’s CORS troubleshooting guide.
If the OPTIONS preflight fails, fix the server’s CORS response
Browsers send a preflight to ask whether a cross-origin request is allowed. An Authorization header, other non-safelisted headers, a non-simple content type, or a method other than GET, HEAD, or POST can trigger it. The preflight describes the intended method and headers; the server must approve the origin, method, and headers before the browser sends the actual request. MDN’s CORS guide explains the request and response headers involved.
Configure CORS where the API response is produced, or at a gateway or proxy that controls that response. React cannot grant itself permission to read another origin’s response. Check that the server handles OPTIONS and returns headers matching the request, including the application’s exact origin and any requested headers such as Authorization. Common mismatches include:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Access-Control-Allow-Originis missing or does not match the page’s origin.- The requested method is absent from
Access-Control-Allow-Methods. - A requested header is absent from
Access-Control-Allow-Headers. - The server or gateway does not handle the preflight successfully.
If a preflighted request encounters a redirect, check the Network panel. Some browsers have inconsistent support for following redirects after preflight. Prefer a canonical endpoint that avoids an unnecessary redirect where possible. An Authorization-triggered preflight cannot always be bypassed by first making a simpler request; the server may need to support the preflight.
If the actual request was sent, read its HTTP status
Once you confirm the browser sent the actual request, treat its status as an API response to diagnose—not as proof of a CORS failure. MDN defines 401 Unauthorized as a request that lacks valid authentication credentials, and 403 Forbidden as a request the server understood but refused to process. API-specific response bodies and documentation may add meanings beyond these general definitions.

For a 401, check authentication
Check whether the expected credential is present, current, and formatted for the authentication scheme the API expects. A 401 response normally includes a WWW-Authenticate challenge; inspect it for the expected scheme or other clues, then check the API’s documentation for its token requirements.
For a 403, check permission
A 403 usually means the server recognized the request but will not authorize the requested operation. Check whether the account or token has the required role, scope, resource access, and permission for that action. Repeating an unchanged request will not resolve a permission denial.

An API can return a 401 or 403 while React reports only a generic CORS or network failure. If the error response lacks the CORS headers required by the browser, the browser can withhold that response from JavaScript. Inspect the Console and Network evidence, and ensure the server applies its CORS policy to relevant error responses as well as to preflight and successful responses. See MDN’s explanation of CORS response access.
For cookie authentication, align Fetch and server settings
Fetch’s default credentials mode is same-origin, so a cross-origin request does not send cookies by default. If the API’s cookie-based login flow requires them, set credentials: 'include' on the request:

fetch('https://api.example.com/query', {
credentials: 'include'
});
The server must allow credentialed access by returning Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true and a specific allowed origin. Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * is not valid for a credentialed request. Preflight requests themselves are sent without credentials; the preflight response must still indicate that the subsequent credentialed request is allowed. Review the Fetch API guide for the credentials and CORS rules.
If those headers appear correct but the cookie is still absent, check its SameSite attributes and whether the browser blocks third-party cookies. Those restrictions are separate from CORS permission and can prevent a cookie from being sent.

Choose an authentication path that fits the API
| Approach | What to check | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
Bearer token in an Authorization header |
Confirm that the token is present, valid, and formatted as the API expects; allow the Authorization header in the server’s CORS response. |
The header can trigger an OPTIONS preflight. Never put a privileged API secret in React code delivered to the browser. |
| Cookie-based credentials | Use credentials: 'include' when needed; configure an explicit allowed origin and Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true; check cookie and browser policies. |
Cookies require coordinated client and server configuration, and cookie-based authentication requires attention to cross-site request forgery (CSRF) protections. |
| Direct browser-to-API request | Verify the API permits the app’s origin and the requested methods and headers. | The API operator must control the CORS response. Browser code cannot override the API’s policy. |
| Application-controlled server-side proxy | Have the proxy call the API and return an appropriate response to the application. | This can avoid exposing a privileged API secret to the browser, but the application operator must control and secure the proxy and follow the API provider’s terms. |
These options are not interchangeable fixes: use the authentication model the API supports, and ensure the party producing the response can configure the required access policy.
Avoid shortcuts that cannot return readable query data
mode: 'no-cors' does not fix a request whose response React needs to inspect. It yields an opaque response, so JavaScript cannot read its body or headers. Disabling browser security or using a CORS-bypass extension is not a safe substitute for server configuration. If a third-party API does not permit browser access, use an approved server-side backend or proxy under your control, follow the provider’s terms, and keep privileged secrets out of browser-delivered code.
React can make the request, but it does not control CORS
You can call Fetch from a React Effect, but moving the call into useEffect does not change browser CORS rules or server authentication. React’s useEffect documentation recommends a framework’s built-in data-fetching mechanism where available; manual fetching in Effects can complicate caching and lead to network waterfalls or race conditions. Those are data-fetching design concerns, separate from a CORS or authentication fix.
