The Best VS Code Settings for Working Across Multiple Projects

Put personal defaults in User settings, shared conventions in project settings, and related roots in a multi-root workspace. Profiles and Settings Sync solve different needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best VS Code setup for multiple projects is not one universal settings.json. Put personal preferences in User settings, conventions collaborators need in project settings, and shared behavior for related roots in a multi-root workspace. Use Profiles for different personal work contexts and Settings Sync to carry selected user configuration between installations.

Choose the right scope before choosing settings

VS Code settings have different scopes, and the scope determines who gets a preference and where it applies. Use the Settings editor’s User, Workspace, and, where available, Folder tabs to see the active scope. Applicable workspace or folder settings override User settings. VS Code settings documentation

Choice Best when What it governs Main limitation
User settings A preference should follow you across projects Global personal defaults Can be overridden by workspace or folder settings. VS Code settings documentation
Single-folder workspace One repository is the active unit Project settings in .vscode/settings.json Does not group multiple roots in one workspace. VS Code settings documentation VS Code workspaces documentation
Multi-root workspace Several related folders need one window Shared workspace settings plus supported folder-specific settings Folder settings are limited to resource-scoped settings; editor-wide preferences are shared. VS Code multi-root workspaces documentation
Profile You need distinct user setups for different roles or tasks User settings and extensions by work context Does not replace repository-level settings; synchronization is configured separately. VS Code Profiles documentation
Settings Sync Selected user configuration should follow you to other installations Selected categories such as settings, keybindings, extensions, or profiles Extensions are not synchronized to or from SSH, dev container, or WSL remote windows. VS Code Settings Sync documentation

Keep personal comfort settings with you

Use User settings for preferences you want across repositories, such as font size, whitespace display, or personal navigation choices. Those are examples, not universal recommendations: select preferences that suit your work.

Put shared project conventions in the repository

Use project settings for choices collaborators should share, such as project-specific file exclusions or conventions. For a folder workspace, VS Code stores these in .vscode/settings.json. Keep machine-specific or personal values out of configuration intended for the team.

Which VS Code settings should I use for multiple projects?

Start by asking who should receive a setting, how many roots it should cover, and whether the difference belongs to the project or to your personal role. There is no objectively best list for every developer: useful settings depend on languages, installed extensions, repositories, and individual preferences.

  • Only you, across projects: choose User settings.
  • Everyone working in one repository: choose that project’s workspace settings.
  • Several related roots open together: use shared settings in a multi-root workspace, with supported resource settings in individual roots when needed.
  • Your personal setup changes by role or task: use a Profile.
  • You want selected user configuration on another installation: configure Settings Sync.

For consistent formatting or less file-tree noise, choose the relevant setting in the current Settings editor and place it at the scope that matches the intended audience. Setting availability and descriptions can vary with VS Code updates and installed extensions; the editor provides setting information and completion.

When do folder settings help in a multi-root workspace?

A multi-root workspace can hold shared settings for the group while each root retains supported resource settings of its own. That is useful when related repositories have different language-specific file behavior. For example, a code root and a documentation root may need different resource-level behavior while remaining open in one window.

Folder settings cannot independently control every editor preference. VS Code limits folder scope to resource settings to avoid conflicts; editor-wide preferences such as zoom are not independently imposed per root. VS Code multi-root workspaces documentation

What is the benefit of multi-root workspace over a folder?

A multi-root workspace brings several related folders into one VS Code window and lets you save that set as a named workspace. Its roots do not have to be siblings in the file system. This is useful when coordinated work spans repositories, such as application source and its documentation. If one project is the active unit, opening it as a regular folder is simpler. VS Code workspaces documentation

  1. Open the first folder in VS Code.
  2. Select File > Add Folder to Workspace and add the other roots you need.
  3. Save the workspace as a .code-workspace file so you can reopen the same group.

Shared workspace settings live under the "settings" key in that file. A root can also have .vscode/settings.json for supported folder-level options. A normal single-folder workspace instead stores its project settings in that folder’s .vscode/settings.json. VS Code multi-root workspaces documentation VS Code settings documentation

A small illustrative structure

project/.vscode/settings.json
team.code-workspace

Use the project file for settings meant for that repository. In a multi-root workspace, put group-wide settings under "settings" in the workspace file, and use each root’s project settings only for supported resource-level differences. This is a layout illustration, not a universal set of setting names.

Use Profiles when your own setup changes

Profiles separate personal customizations and extensions for different roles, languages, or tasks. Select a Profile for a new window, or export it when you need to move that personal setup. Profiles are user customization sets, not a way to distribute project conventions: keep team-required settings with the repository so collaborators do not need your personal Profile. A Profile can be synchronized when the Profiles category is enabled in Settings Sync. VS Code Profiles documentation

How can I synchronize settings across devices?

Turn on Settings Sync and choose which categories to synchronize or exclude. It can carry selected user configuration between VS Code installations; it does not replace project settings stored with a repository or workspace. VS Code Settings Sync documentation

Remote windows have a specific extension limitation: extensions are not synchronized to or from SSH, dev container, or WSL remote windows. If an extension or setting behaves differently in a remote session, check whether it belongs to the local VS Code installation or the remote environment before troubleshooting.

Check trust before opening an unfamiliar project

Workspace Trust opens unfamiliar folders in Restricted Mode, which limits features that can execute project code. In a trusted multi-root workspace, adding an unfamiliar folder prompts you; if it is not trusted, VS Code can switch the overall workspace to Restricted Mode. Review a project’s source before trusting it. As the Visual Studio Code Workspace Trust documentation puts it: “When in doubt, leave a folder in Restricted Mode. You can always enable trust later.” VS Code Workspace Trust documentation
