The site generator reads those files during a build; after an edit is committed and the site is rebuilt and redeployed, the updated catalog appears online. Developers can edit the files directly, while editors who prefer a browser interface can use a Git-based CMS that writes changes back to the repository.
How the file-based catalog works
Instead of querying a database when a visitor opens a page, the site generator reads product data while building the site and renders that data into product pages or listings. The product content lives alongside the site code in a Git repository, so ordinary repository history records changes. Static CMS documents support for content stored in Markdown, JSON, or YAML in Git repositories (Static CMS overview).
This approach fits catalogs whose edits can follow the normal build-and-publish cycle. It is not a live inventory system: a changed file affects the published site after a new build and deployment. If prices or stock must change continuously and independently of that cycle, check that your generator and deployment cadence can meet the requirement before choosing this design.
Choose how product records are organized
Start by defining a consistent set of fields that matches what your site needs. A practical starting schema could include a stable ID or slug, name, price, currency, availability, image path, short description, and category. These are design suggestions, not requirements imposed by a CMS; choose field names and formats that your generator can read reliably.
#1 Best Overall
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
Then choose where records live. A single JSON or YAML file can be convenient for a small, centrally edited catalog. Separate files can make individual products easier to review or change independently. Static CMS distinguishes repeated entries in a folder collection—for example, product pages—from uniquely structured file collections such as settings (Static CMS collection types). The documentation supports these patterns but does not establish a catalog size at which one is better than the other; let your generator and team’s editing habits guide the choice.
Choose an editing workflow
| Workflow | Who it suits | How edits reach the repository |
|---|---|---|
| Edit structured files directly | Maintainers comfortable with text files and Git | Make and validate the change, then commit and push it. Repository history records the change. |
| Use a Git-based CMS | Editors who benefit from a browser-based interface | The CMS writes content to repository files. Depending on the backend and configuration, edits may go directly to a branch or through a review workflow. |
Static CMS describes an editing interface for Git-based content workflows, with content kept alongside code (Static CMS overview). Pages CMS describes editing files in GitHub repositories without a separate CMS database (Pages CMS documentation). Static CMS documentation lists GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket among its supported backends; Pages CMS is GitHub-focused. Check each tool’s current provider support and setup requirements before adopting it (Static CMS backend overview; Pages CMS documentation).

Set up the update-to-publication path
- Define the schema. Decide which fields are required, how identifiers and prices are represented, and how image paths and categories are written.
- Create the catalog files. Use the format and file layout that your site generator and, if applicable, your CMS support. Keep repeated product records consistent.
- Connect the generator. Configure the site to load the catalog during its build and use the data to render the relevant product pages or listings. Follow your generator’s own conventions; the exact configuration depends on the framework.
- Validate changes. Before publishing, check required fields, duplicate IDs or slugs, valid price values, and image paths. Run the site’s normal build and fix errors it reports. These checks are good implementation practice; support for them depends on your generator and validation setup.
- Publish through Git. With direct file editing, commit and push the validated change to the branch used by your deployment workflow. With a browser CMS, decide whether edits can go directly to that branch or need review first.
Decide who can publish changes
A local Static CMS backend requires editors to commit and push changes manually, while a hosted backend can save to its configured repository branch. The available workflow depends on backend configuration. Static CMS also documents editorial workflow options for draft, review, and approval stages, which can help teams keep unreviewed edits out of the publication branch (Static CMS backend overview; Static CMS editorial workflows).
For a small team where editors understand Git, direct edits and review through normal commits may be enough. If editors need forms, or should not change files by hand, a Git-based CMS can provide a more approachable interface while keeping the content in the repository. In either case, make the branch and approval path clear: a saved edit is not necessarily a live product until the site has been built and deployed.

When this approach is not enough
File-based catalogs work when product changes can wait for a build and deployment. They do not, by themselves, provide a continuously updated inventory feed or a database-backed way to update stock and prices outside the site’s publication process. If those values change frequently, compare that need with the actual build cadence and publishing controls you can operate; the documented file-and-Git workflows do not establish performance limits or suitability for every inventory requirement.
