Groups organize related tabs; windows separate browsing workspaces. Use a tab group to keep pages for a task together on Android. On an Android tablet, use separate Chrome windows when you want distinct workspaces or split-screen browsing. Google documents tab groups for Android devices generally, but its instructions for separate windows are specifically for tablets.

What tab groups do
A tab group collects related pages in Chrome’s tab workflow. From the tab switcher, you can create a group, add tabs through a menu or by dragging them, and give the group a name and color. You can later rename or recolor it, search for it, close it, and reopen it from the Tab Groups area.
Google states that “When you create or edit a tab group, changes are automatically saved and synced across devices where you’re signed in with the same Google Account.” Tab syncing is controlled in Chrome’s Sync settings: turning off Open Tabs stops tab groups from automatically syncing. A separate setting under Tabs and tab groups controls whether groups from other devices open automatically.

Closing is different from deleting
Closing a group leaves it saved so you can reopen it later. Deleting or ungrouping a group is different and can affect other devices signed in to the same account, so use close when you only want to put the group away for now.
What separate windows do on Android tablets
On a tablet, Chrome’s window controls let you create another window, switch between active windows, restore inactive ones, and close windows. Open a new window from the Chrome menu or Manage windows. You can move a tab or an entire tab group to another window through a menu or by dragging it.

Use split screen when you need two views
Tablet windows are useful when two browsing contexts need to remain distinct or visible together. Google says that when Chrome is full screen, opening a new window starts in split screen by default.
What to do if Chrome will not open or restore a window
Google warns that a new window may not open after the window limit is reached, and an inactive window may not restore if that limit has been exceeded. The current help instructions do not state a numeric limit. Close an unneeded window in Manage windows and try again rather than relying on an older or unverified window-count figure.

A simple way to decide
- Start with a tab group if the problem is that related pages are hard to find or keep together.
- Choose another window on a tablet if the problem is keeping separate activities apart or viewing two browsing spaces in split screen.
- Combine them on a tablet when you want both levels of organization: groups for related tabs, windows for distinct workspaces.
