What Ctrl, Alt, Command, and Fn Keys Actually Do

Modifier keys change how another key works, but shortcut behavior depends on your device, app and keyboard settings. Here’s what Ctrl, Alt, Command and Fn do.

Ctrl, Alt, Command and Fn are modifier keys: they change how another key is interpreted when you press the two together. The result depends on the operating system, app, keyboard layout and settings, so a shortcut that works on a Mac may not work the same way on a Chromebook or Windows-style keyboard.

What modifier keys do

A modifier key is held down while you press another key. For example, hold Command and press C to copy on a Mac. The modifier changes the meaning of C; it does not have one universal action by itself. Apple notes that shortcuts can vary between apps in its Mac keyboard shortcuts guide.

What Ctrl, Alt, and Command do

Ctrl / Control

Ctrl is used in many shortcuts on Windows-style keyboards and Chromebooks. On a Mac, Control is a separate modifier from Command. One familiar Mac use is Control-click, which opens a shortcut menu. Do not assume Ctrl can replace Command in Mac shortcuts.

Alt / Option

On a Mac, the key labeled Option (⌥) corresponds to Alt in Apple’s documented Windows-keyboard mapping. Option can modify shortcuts and can also be used to enter special characters. On a Chromebook, Alt is an active modifier for shortcuts and can be configured for some input actions; its job depends on the shortcut and settings.

  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.

Command / Cmd (⌘)

Command is the modifier used for many familiar Mac shortcuts. Apple’s examples include Command-C to copy, Command-V to paste, Command-Z to undo and Command-S to save. If you connect a Windows PC keyboard to a Mac, Apple says to use the Windows logo key or Ctrl in place of Command for the documented shortcut pattern. That mapping does not make Ctrl and Command universally interchangeable.

Why shortcuts differ across Mac, Chromebook, and Windows-style keyboards

The key label is only part of the answer. The operating system defines many shortcuts, apps can add or change their own, and keyboard settings can alter what a key does. On Chromebooks, for example, Google documents Ctrl+Alt+Z as the shortcut to toggle ChromeVox, while the Search/Launcher key appears in system and accessibility shortcuts. A Windows keyboard’s Windows key works as Search/Launcher on a Chromebook, and Google lets users remap modifier keys in Chromebook keyboard settings.

Use the shortcut convention for the device and app you are actually using. Apple’s Windows-to-Mac mapping explains how certain physical keys correspond when a Windows keyboard is connected to a Mac; it is not a promise that every Windows shortcut behaves like a Mac shortcut.

What Fn or Globe does

Fn, sometimes shown as a Globe key on Apple keyboards, often changes what the top row does. Depending on the keyboard and settings, those keys may control system features such as brightness or volume, or send standard F-key actions such as F1 and F2. On Apple keyboards, holding Fn/Globe while pressing a top-row key invokes its standard F-key action. macOS can also be set so the top row acts as standard function keys without holding Fn.

Chromebooks also let users choose whether the top row acts as function keys. Google notes that the available remapping options for F11 and F12 depend on whether that setting is enabled.

Why does a function key change brightness instead of acting like F1?

  1. Check the key’s printed icon. A brightness, volume or other system-control symbol indicates that the key may perform that action by default.
  2. Try holding Fn or Globe as you press the key. On Apple keyboards, this invokes the standard F-key action when the top row otherwise controls system features.
  3. Check the keyboard setting. On a Mac, look for the setting that makes F1, F2 and other top-row keys act as standard function keys. On a Chromebook, inspect the setting for treating top-row keys as function keys.
  4. Retest the shortcut in the app. Apps can have their own shortcuts, so a key combination may work in one app but not another.

Menu names and available options may change with software updates or keyboard models. If the setting does not match these descriptions, consult the current keyboard settings for your operating system.
