To enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on X, open Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication, choose an available method, and follow the prompts. X documents authentication apps, security keys, and text messages, but SMS availability depends on account eligibility, country, and carrier.
Where is the two-factor authentication setting on X?
In the X app for iOS, open your profile menu, then go to Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication. X’s enrollment prompts guide you through the selected method and may ask you to confirm the email address associated with your account if it has not already been confirmed. The options shown can vary by account. See X’s two-factor authentication instructions.
How do I enable 2FA on X?
- Open the X app and tap your profile menu.
- Go to Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Two-factor authentication.
- Choose an available method: Authentication app, Security key, or Text message.
- Complete the on-screen setup and save the backup code X provides.
The setup details depend on which method you choose. An authentication app or security key is a suitable choice if SMS is not offered for your account.
Choose a 2FA method
| Method | How it works | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication app | A compatible app generates time-based, one-time codes for login. | Install a TOTP-compatible app and have access to it when signing in. X lists Google Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile, and 1Password as examples. |
| Security key | A physical key provides the second check. | X describes connecting a key over USB or syncing it through Bluetooth or NFC. Check that the connection type works with your device; a key is optional, not required for app-based 2FA. |
| Text message | X sends a login code by SMS. | Availability depends on account eligibility, country, and carrier. X ended SMS 2FA support for non-Premium subscribers effective March 20, 2023; Premium availability may vary by country and carrier. |
Set up an authentication app
- On the Two-factor authentication screen, select Authentication app and start setup.
- Verify your account if X prompts you to do so.
- Open your TOTP-compatible app and scan the QR code shown by X to link the account.
- Enter the code generated by the app into X, then verify it to finish setup.
Keep access to the authenticator app available for future logins. X’s examples include Google Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile, and 1Password; the examples are not an endorsement of a particular app.

Set up a security key
- On the Two-factor authentication screen, choose Security key.
- Verify your account if asked, then follow the device instructions displayed by X.
- Connect the key through USB, or sync it using Bluetooth or NFC if supported by the key and device.
X says you can add multiple keys and manage them in the security-key section. If you prefer a physical key, make sure its connection method works with your device before setup.
Save and use your backup code
X automatically generates a backup code when you enable 2FA in its iOS or Android app; you can also generate one on x.com. Store it somewhere secure and separate from your phone. X allows up to five active backup codes. Use codes in the order generated: using one out of order invalidates previously generated codes. X explains these recovery rules in its two-factor authentication troubleshooting guidance.

Troubleshoot login problems
An SMS code does not arrive
Wait at least two minutes before requesting or trying again, and check your phone and mobile settings. A phone that is offline or in flight mode may not receive codes. SMS also may not be an available 2FA option for your account.

A third-party app or device asks for your password
Some third-party devices or applications that require your X password may need a temporary password after 2FA is enabled. A temporary password is distinct from a backup code.
You cannot access your second factor
Use an active backup code if you have one. If you are locked out and do not have an active backup code, follow X’s direction to contact support.

Keep your X account secure
Two-factor authentication adds a second login check, but it is only one part of account security. X recommends using a strong password that you do not reuse, being cautious with suspicious links, and confirming you are on x.com before entering login information. See X’s account security tips.
