On an Android tablet, touch and hold the Chrome tab you want to separate, drag it to the left or right edge of the screen, and release it. Chrome opens that tab in a second window and starts split screen. Google’s documented Chrome-window gesture is for tablets; if you want Chrome beside a different app, use Android’s system split-screen controls instead.
Open two Chrome windows side by side
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome and go to the tab you want in a separate window.
- Touch and hold the tab.
- Drag it to the left or right edge of the screen, then release it.
- Chrome opens the tab in a new window and enters split-screen mode. If Chrome is already full-screen when you open a new window, Google says the new window starts in split screen by default.
Google’s instruction is to “touch and hold, then drag and drop it to the edge of your screen” to open a tab in a new window. See Chrome’s split-view instructions for Android.
Find, switch, restore, or move Chrome windows
Chrome’s Manage windows screen helps you handle windows after opening them:
- To see open windows or create one, open Chrome’s More menu and choose Manage windows. The Active section lists recently opened windows and includes New window.
- To switch windows, choose More > Manage windows, then tap the window you want.
- To bring back a window Chrome has set aside, find it in Inactive and tap Restore.
- To move a tab or tab group, touch and hold it, choose Move group to another window, select the destination, then tap Move. You can also drag the tab into the other window.
If Chrome cannot open or restore a window, its window limit may have been reached. Close an active window and try again; Google does not specify one universal numeric limit. For more details, see Chrome’s Android tab and window help.

Show Chrome beside a different app
Chrome’s two-window split view is different from Android split screen, which pairs Chrome with another app. On an Android tablet:
- Open Recents.
- Touch and hold the Chrome logo above the Chrome window.
- Tap Split top or Split screen.
- Choose the other app to fill the remaining half.
While the apps are in split screen, Android also supports dragging an image or link from Chrome into the other app. See Google’s Chrome guidance on sharing pages on Android.

Tablet, phone, and desktop-windowing limits
Google’s instructions for opening two Chrome windows with the tab-to-edge gesture specify Android tablets. They do not establish that the same workflow is available on phones. Android desktop windowing is a separate feature for supported devices; it can provide resizable app windows and connected-display support, but availability and behavior vary by device. It is not required for the tablet gesture above. If desktop-windowing controls are missing, check your device maker’s help. Android Help: desktop windowing and connected displays.
