Choose the platform your team already uses, then check how your agent handles commands, threads, permissions, and event delivery. Discord offers application commands and context-menu actions that can be permissioned; Slack offers several app entry points and a choice between HTTP and Socket Mode event delivery. Neither platform is a universal winner, and platform features alone do not confirm that a particular coding agent supports either integration.
How to choose between Discord and Slack
For a remote coding agent, the practical question is not which chat platform is better in general. It is whether the agent can receive the actions your team needs, in the places your team expects to use them, with permissions and network exposure you can accept. The official platform documentation describes capabilities, but does not establish a measured performance or productivity advantage for either platform.
- Start with team habits: Prefer the platform where developers already coordinate, unless the agent’s supported workflow or your deployment constraints point elsewhere. The documentation does not measure team adoption.
- Check the interaction surface: Decide whether users need slash commands, contextual actions, buttons, shortcuts, or continuation inside threads.
- Check deployment and access: Confirm how events reach the agent and what permissions the integration requires.
- Verify the agent itself: Confirm its current documentation supports the chosen platform and deployment mode before committing to an implementation.
What users can do in Discord
Discord application commands include slash commands and context-menu commands for users or messages. They use Discord’s interactions model, and command availability can be controlled with default permissions and guild-level overrides for members, roles, and channels. See Discord’s application command documentation.
That makes Discord a natural fit when a team wants explicit actions such as starting an agent task from a slash command or acting on a message through a context menu. Discord’s interaction patterns also include buttons and select menus. The Interactions API can support slash commands and these components without access to arbitrary message content; message-content access is privileged and may be restricted. Details are in Discord’s Message Content Intent FAQ.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a bot or supported app interface
Automation should use Discord’s supported bot and application interfaces, not a developer’s ordinary user account. Discord’s OAuth2 documentation says developers must refrain from automating standard user accounts outside the OAuth2/bot API: Discord OAuth2 documentation.
What users can do in Slack
Slack apps can be invoked through slash commands, shortcuts, interactive components, and Events API workflows. These give an agent several possible entry points: a user might call a command, choose a shortcut, or continue through an interactive control. Slack’s app overview describes the available app patterns, and its slash command tutorial covers command setup.

Slack slash commands do not work in message threads
A developer-created Slack slash command cannot be invoked in a message thread. If the team expects to start or continue agent work directly inside an ongoing review thread, design around a supported interactive component or another entry point rather than relying on a slash command there. This constraint is covered in Slack’s slash command documentation and app overview.
Slack’s AI app conversation surface has its own limitation
Slack documents an Agents & AI Apps experience for conversational apps. In that surface, messages take place in threads, so slash commands are not supported; Slack also advises using public HTTP request URLs rather than Socket Mode for production AI apps. Review the current Slack AI app documentation if that is the intended interface, because platform capabilities and rollout can change.

How the agent receives events
Slack offers two event-delivery patterns relevant to a self-hosted agent. With conventional HTTP delivery, Slack sends requests to a public request URL. With Socket Mode, the app uses a WebSocket connection and does not need a public inbound HTTP request URL. Slack describes Socket Mode as allowing Events API and interactive features “without exposing a public HTTP Request URL.” See Slack Socket Mode.
Socket Mode can be useful when an agent service sits behind a firewall or a static public endpoint is undesirable. The trade-off is distribution: Slack says Socket Mode apps are not currently eligible for listing in the public Slack Marketplace. This matters if the app is intended for broad public distribution, rather than internal team use. Check Socket Mode’s current documentation before choosing.

Discord application commands use Discord’s interactions model. The platform documentation cited here does not establish a full comparison of every delivery option or deployment constraint, so evaluate the agent’s own Discord integration requirements alongside Slack’s delivery choices.
Compare the practical differences
| Decision point | Discord | Slack |
|---|---|---|
| User entry points | Slash commands and user- or message-context commands; interactions can also use components such as buttons and select menus. Source | Slash commands, shortcuts, interactive components, and Events API workflows. Source |
| Command use in threads | Command contexts depend on installation context; the documentation describes guild, DM, and private-channel contexts. Source | Developer-created slash commands do not work in message threads; the AI app conversation surface also does not support them. Source |
| Event delivery | Application commands use the interactions model; the cited documentation does not compare every deployment option. Source | HTTP request URL or Socket Mode WebSocket. Socket Mode avoids a public inbound HTTP URL but is not eligible for public Marketplace listing. Source |
| Access controls | Default command permissions and guild-level overrides can target users, roles, and channels. Source | App scopes grant capabilities; Slack recommends least privilege. Relevant examples include commands, chat:write, and connections:write. Source |
| Dedicated AI app surface | No equivalent Discord-specific AI app surface is established by the cited documentation; Discord application interactions remain available as a command interface. Set permissions for the actions the agent needs
Discord: restrict commands and avoid unnecessary message access
Use command-level and guild-level controls to limit who can start, approve, or stop agent work and where those actions are available. If the workflow can be built from commands and interactive components, Discord documents a path that does not require reading arbitrary message text. Do not assume that all message access is available by default; message-content access is privileged. See the application command documentation and message-content FAQ.

Slack: request only necessary scopes
Slack recommends the principle of least privilege and clear explanations for requested scopes. For example, commands is used for commands and shortcuts, chat:write for posting, and connections:write for Socket Mode. These are examples, not a universal scope set: inspect the agent’s actual feature requirements before authorizing an app. Slack notes that extensive data access may prompt enhanced review. See the scope reference and Slack Marketplace app guidelines.
A practical decision rule
- Lean toward Discord if the team already works there and the agent can be controlled through explicit application commands or contextual actions with the needed permissions.
- Lean toward Slack if the team’s workflow benefits from Slack’s shortcuts and interactive components, or its documented AI app surface is a deliberate requirement—and the thread and delivery constraints fit.
- For a private service behind a firewall, consider Slack Socket Mode if the chosen agent supports it and public Marketplace listing is not required.
- For thread-centric work, test the exact command and continuation flow in the actual surface before deployment; Slack slash commands are not available in message threads.
Before rollout, verify the agent vendor’s current integration documentation, then test who can invoke each action, where it appears, how approvals and stops work, and how the service receives events. These checks establish whether the integration is suitable; neither platform’s general API documentation alone proves compatibility with a particular coding agent.
