Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Billing depends on your carrier and plan. Battery impact is also not universal: official guidance describes both potential efficiency benefits and possible battery-performance costs from using LTE, without offering a comparable measured test.
Does VoLTE use your mobile-data allowance?
Not necessarily. “LTE” describes the network technology that carries a VoLTE call; it does not, by itself, determine how your carrier bills it. The FCC describes VoLTE as packet technology that routes voice traffic over LTE, while carriers may account for that traffic as voice service.
For example, Rogers Support says VoLTE calls are billed as traditional voice calls and deducted from included plan minutes. TPG Support says its VoLTE calls are charged like other voice calls and do not use mobile data. Omantel’s VoLTE FAQ likewise says no data is consumed during VoLTE voice calls and describes billing in standard voice minutes.
Those are statements about the named providers’ services, not a rule for every carrier or plan. Rogers says international roaming calls follow the roaming plan; TPG’s guidance concerns its Australian offering. Check your carrier’s terms for your country and, especially, while roaming. A VoLTE call should not be assumed to be free, unlimited, or exempt from charges just because it does not use the regular data allowance.

Does VoLTE drain your battery?
There is no well-supported universal answer that VoLTE always uses more battery or always saves it. Google Pixel Help describes longer battery life as a VoLTE benefit, and Swisscom lists lower battery usage. By contrast, Apple’s iPhone guidance cautions that using 4G/LTE may decrease battery performance. Omantel’s VoLTE FAQ says battery consumption is like that of a normal call.
These statements do not establish a direct, controlled comparison of battery runtime on the same phone, software, network coverage, and calling pattern. The cited sources provide no comparable battery-life measurement or percentage. Your result can vary with the phone, software, network conditions, and the radio technology used for comparison; LTE coverage and call behavior matter alongside the VoLTE feature.

If you noticed unusual battery drain, these sources do not show that VoLTE is the cause. Check your phone’s battery-usage diagnostics and seek device or carrier support if the change persists.
What VoLTE needs to work
Both the handset and the carrier network must support VoLTE. Samsung Support explains that simultaneous voice and data on LTE depends on VoLTE support from both the phone and network. For its own service, Rogers Support lists factors including a compatible plan, capable device, suitable SIM, software updates in some cases, and network compatibility.

Where to find the VoLTE setting
Menu names and availability differ by phone, carrier, and region. On Samsung phones, the sample path in Samsung Support’s instructions is Settings > Connections > Mobile networks, then enable VoLTE calls. Apple notes that LTE and Voice & Data/VoLTE options depend on the iPhone, carrier, and region. If you do not see a VoLTE control, check your phone maker’s current instructions or ask your carrier whether the feature is provisioned for your device and plan.
Quick Recap
What to check if you are concerned about cost or battery
- For call charges: Confirm whether your carrier counts VoLTE calls against voice minutes or the data allowance, and check the separate roaming rules for your destination.
- For compatibility: Verify that your phone, SIM, plan, and carrier network support VoLTE in your market.
- For battery changes: Review your device’s battery diagnostics rather than assuming VoLTE is responsible; the official guidance does not provide a universal runtime result.
