A Chromebook is a laptop that runs ChromeOS. Android is a separate operating system used mainly on phones and tablets. Some Chromebook models can install Android apps from Google Play, but that does not make ChromeOS an Android operating system—and app availability depends on the model and, on managed devices, administrator settings.
Chromebook, ChromeOS and Android: what each term means
- Chromebook: the laptop itself. Google describes a Chromebook as a laptop powered by ChromeOS; models can differ in hardware and features. Google’s Chromebook overview
- ChromeOS: the operating system installed on a Chromebook. Google describes it as including cloud storage, Google services and security features. Google’s Chromebook introduction
- Android: a separate operating system. Some Chromebooks can run Android apps, but ChromeOS remains the laptop’s operating system. Google Play and Android apps on Chromebook
The distinction is similar to the difference between a computer and the software it runs: Chromebook names a type of laptop, while ChromeOS names its operating system. Android apps are one optional source of apps on certain ChromeOS devices.
How ChromeOS and Android compare
| Question | Chromebook with ChromeOS | Android phone or tablet |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A laptop running ChromeOS. | A mobile device running Android. |
| Apps | Web apps; Android apps through Google Play on supported models; and Linux development tools on some devices. | Android apps are native to the platform. |
| Typical work | Browser tasks, documents, spreadsheets, presentations and other laptop workflows. | Mobile workflows; keyboard and external-device options vary by device. |
| Connection between devices | Can connect to an Android phone for selected messages, notifications, photos, hotspot access and unlocking features. | Can provide selected connected-device features to a Chromebook. |
| What to check | Exact model’s Play Store eligibility, administrator restrictions, Linux support if needed and automatic update end date. | Whether the device and apps meet the requirements of the intended workflow. |
These are broad platform distinctions, not promises that every Chromebook or Android device has the same features. Google Play eligibility and Phone Hub features depend on supported devices and settings.
What can you do on a Chromebook?
Google lists browsing, email, note-taking, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, video streaming, collaboration, social networking, creative tools and games among Chromebook uses. Actual app availability and performance depend on the device and service; some apps require subscriptions, and some games need an internet connection or particular specifications. Many everyday tasks can be done in a browser or with web apps. A Chromebook is still a laptop, so it can also be used with a keyboard, mouse and external storage where the device supports them. Avoid assuming that every model has the same ports, power or capabilities.
Android apps: only on supported Chromebooks
Google Play is available on some Chromebooks, not all. Even a compatible model may not offer Play Store installation when it is managed by a school or employer whose administrator has blocked it. Check the exact model and, if applicable, the account or device-management policy before relying on a specific Android app. Google’s Play Store guidance

Linux tools: an optional development environment
Some Chromebooks offer an optional Linux development environment with command-line tools, code editors and IDEs. It is not enabled by default, and device or account restrictions may prevent its use. Linux support does not mean that every conventional desktop program will work; Google documents limitations and unsupported features. Google’s Linux development environment guide
Do Chromebooks work offline?
Yes, some Chromebook tasks work without an internet connection. Google lists Offline Gmail, Keep, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, its photo editor and the media player as examples. Files can be stored on the device or in cloud storage. Google’s Chromebook introduction

Offline access is not the same as having every service available offline: streaming, syncing and other online services still need connectivity, and the relevant files or features may need to be set up for offline use in advance.

As of Google’s policy checked on October 4, 2026, ChromeOS devices receive ten years of automatic updates, with the applicable end date determined by the specific model. Do not calculate the date from a laptop’s purchase date or assume all Chromebooks stop updating in the same year. Google directs users to the device’s update schedule; the Chromebook’s Settings also shows its update information. Google’s Auto Update policy Find when your Chromebook receives updates

Google warns that a Chromebook that has reached end of support no longer receives automatic software and security updates. Check the model-specific schedule before buying an older device or continuing to rely on one. Google’s update schedule guidance
Extended updates on some older models
For eligible devices released before 2021, Google’s current extended-update policy may require opting in to receive updates for ten years from the platform’s release. Choosing extended updates removes access to Google Play and Android app support. For those devices, longer update coverage and continued Android app support can therefore be competing priorities; check the device’s eligibility and terms before opting in.
