Keep XLSX when workbook features such as multiple worksheets, formatting, or charts matter. Exporting XLSX to CSV creates a table from a worksheet; it does not preserve the workbook as an equivalent file.
CSV or XLSX: what each format is for
CSV represents records and fields as text. RFC 4180 describes a widely used convention for headers, comma-separated fields, quoted values, embedded commas and line breaks, and doubled quotation marks. It is an informational RFC, not a formal specification that every CSV implementation follows identically. See RFC 4180.
XLSX is a spreadsheet workbook format. Microsoft says the format can preserve worksheet and chart data, formatting, and other workbook features. CSV instead saves text and values as displayed in the active worksheet. That distinction makes CSV useful as a tabular interchange format and XLSX useful when the spreadsheet itself is part of what needs to be retained. Why CSV fits many shell pipelines
Because CSV is text, command-line tools can work with it in composable stages. The csvkit 2.2.0 documentation describes utilities to list column names, select columns, filter matching rows, convert formats, calculate summary statistics, and query data with SQL. See the csvkit documentation.

Text does not mean that every line is a record or every comma is a separator. Under the RFC 4180 convention, a quoted field may contain a line break or comma. A plain line-oriented or delimiter-splitting command can therefore misread valid CSV. Use a parser designed for CSV, and check the input’s delimiter and quoting conventions rather than assuming all producers use them the same way. RFC 4180 documents the common rules and their limits.
What an XLSX-to-CSV export changes
CSV is not a container for a complete Excel workbook. Microsoft states: “This file format (.csv) saves only the text and values as they are displayed in cells of the active worksheet.” A CSV export does not carry over formatting, and saving as a text format loses workbook formatting. It also exports only the active sheet, so other worksheets are not included in that file. See Microsoft’s feature-transfer guidance and its list of Excel-supported file formats.

If the workbook is the record you need to preserve, keep the XLSX and treat any CSV as a derived export. If a script needs rows and columns, identify the worksheet to extract and validate the exported table before relying on it.
Convert deliberately, then validate
Conversion tools can read Excel workbooks and select a worksheet. csvkit’s in2csv supports Excel formats and worksheet selection; pandas provides separate read_csv and read_excel interfaces, with an Excel engine such as openpyxl for .xlsx files. See csvkit in2csv and pandas I/O documentation.

- Choose the source sheet. Determine which worksheet the job needs; a CSV export represents one sheet, not the entire workbook.
- Convert or read the workbook with a workbook-aware tool. For example, use csvkit’s
in2csvwith its worksheet-selection option, or pandas’read_excelfor .xlsx. - Check the resulting table. Verify the sheet, header names, row and column interpretation, and the types and values the downstream job depends on.
- Make parsing predictable where needed. csvkit documents automatic delimiter sniffing and type inference, while warning that they can occasionally err. Its documentation describes
--snifflimit 0to disable sniffing and--no-inferenceto disable inference; confirm each utility’s own help because options do not necessarily apply across every command.
Is CSV always faster than XLSX?
No universal speed winner is established by the cited documentation: it describes format behavior and tool capabilities, not a controlled comparison of XLSX and CSV processing speed. Actual processing depends on the file, operation, and tools involved, so a general speed ratio or file-size crossover would be misleading. csvkit does advise considering SQL-oriented workflows or other tools for larger files or more complex analysis, but does not give a quantified threshold.
