No—not as a feature you should rely on offline. Google’s setup instructions require you to sign in to Gemini Apps and use Guided Vision inside Gemini Live while sharing your camera. Google’s cited pages do not explicitly say “internet connection required,” so offline incompatibility is an inference from those cloud-service requirements, not a direct statement from Google.
When you share the camera, video becomes part of the Live interaction that Gemini processes to answer you. What Google stores and uses to improve its services depends in part on your Gemini Apps Activity setting.
What Guided Vision does—and how you start it
Guided Vision is a camera-sharing feature within Gemini Live. You talk with Gemini while sharing your device’s camera, and it can describe what it sees or help with tasks such as reading small text, identifying an object, or understanding your surroundings. Google says availability is rolling out gradually, so the feature may not yet appear for every user.
- In Gemini settings, enable Use Guided Vision in Live.
- Start a Gemini Live conversation.
- Share your camera and ask your question aloud.

What data is involved when you share the camera?
For Guided Vision to respond to what your camera shows, the video you share is content provided to Gemini and processed as part of the Live interaction. That interaction can also involve your spoken requests and a transcript. Google’s privacy notice describes information that may be collected across Gemini Apps use, including prompts and spoken requests; shared content such as videos, photos, files, screens, and browser-page content; Live transcripts and recordings; feedback; and instructions for Gemini.
The notice also lists broader categories—such as generated content, information from connected apps and devices, device and app details, interaction logs, performance and crash data, general location, and subscription information. These are categories Google says may be collected across Gemini Apps; they should not be read as a claim that every category is collected in every Guided Vision session.

Google’s published pages do not specify how video is technically transmitted, the rate at which frames are sent, or whether individual image frames are retained separately from a recorded Live interaction.
What changes when Keep Activity is on or off?

These descriptions come from Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. Turning Keep Activity off does not mean that nothing is retained: Google describes temporary storage for service provision and feedback processing.

Google says Gemini Live audio, video, and screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default. That does not mean they are not processed: Google says Live audio, video, and screenshares are still used to respond to you and help make Gemini safe. The treatment of Live transcripts is different: with Keep Activity on, Google says transcripts are used to improve its services, including AI models.
Keep Activity is also distinct from controls in other Google services. Google specifically notes a separate Gemini for Home setting concerning voice, audio, and Live recordings; changing Gemini Apps Activity should not be assumed to change that separate control. Important safety limit
Google warns: “Guided vision can make mistakes. It’s not intended as a medical device, mobility aid, or substitute for safe-travel guides. Don’t use it for navigation or obstacle detection.” Treat its descriptions as assistance with understanding a scene, not as a way to find a safe route or detect hazards. The warning appears in Google’s Guided Vision accessibility instructions.
