Mars rovers cannot guarantee that a rock sample is completely free of Earth material. Instead, they reduce contamination through clean hardware, careful sample handling, sealed containers and monitoring tools that help scientists identify possible sources. Curiosity and Perseverance use different approaches: Curiosity processes rock powder for onboard instruments, while Perseverance seals rock cores in tubes for possible future return.
How a rover drills and collects Martian material
Both rovers use rotary-percussive drilling: the tool rotates while delivering impacts to engage hard rock. What happens after drilling depends on the mission.
Curiosity: powder for onboard analysis
Curiosity pulverizes rock, moving the resulting powder along flutes in its drill bit into chambers. Its CHIMRA system sieves and portions the material, then delivers portions to the rover’s SAM and CheMin instruments. NASA describes the sieve threshold as 150 micrometers. See NASA’s explanation of preparing samples on Mars.
Curiosity’s first full-depth sample hole was 6.4 centimeters deep, NASA/JPL reported in 2013. Before delivering sample to its instruments, the rover used some Martian powder to scour traces from inside the drill assembly. The same account reported that the team built eight drills and bored more than 1,200 test holes in 20 rock types during development; those figures describe engineering testing, not a measured contamination rate. NASA/JPL’s account of Curiosity’s first bedrock sample describes the procedure.

Perseverance: cores sealed in tubes
Perseverance uses interchangeable bits to collect rock cores and regolith; it also carries an abrader that removes a rock’s dust-covered outer layer so the rover can make more accurate composition measurements. An internal robotic arm transfers tubes and bits. After collection, the rover inspects and hermetically seals sample tubes, then stores them for possible future retrieval and Earth-laboratory analysis. NASA describes the Perseverance rover components and its drill bits.
Where contamination could come from
Potential contamination is not limited to visible dirt. NASA’s Mars 2020 contamination strategy distinguishes material intrinsic to sample-contact hardware, such as a tube or drill bit, from substances that may travel as vapor or particles during the mission. Possible sources include organic or inorganic material from the rover, gases released by rover materials, and chemical remnants from landing propulsion. The strategy is described in NASA’s technical paper, “Contamination Knowledge Strategy for the Mars 2020 Sample-Collecting Mission”.

The goal is to limit Earth material that could confuse interpretation of Martian chemistry or possible biosignatures, and to preserve enough information about contamination pathways for scientists to evaluate results. A rover’s controls reduce and track risk; they do not prove every molecule in a sample originated on Mars.
How Curiosity reduces traces inside its drill
Curiosity’s sampling procedure included an unusual cleaning step: it used some of the Martian powder itself to scour internal drill surfaces that might retain traces despite prelaunch cleaning. Scott McCloskey, Curiosity drill systems engineer at JPL, explained: “We’ll take the powder we acquired and swish it around to scrub the internal surfaces of the drill bit assembly.” This is a historical description of Curiosity’s procedure, not a universal account of every rover’s operating sequence.

How Perseverance monitors contamination
Perseverance carries five witness tubes alongside its sample tubes, according to NASA’s current rover-components overview. The witness tubes contain materials that can capture potential molecular and particulate contaminants, including gases released from rover materials and other terrestrial material that could be present during the mission. Scientists can examine that record when interpreting substances detected in rover samples.
Witness tubes are monitors, not proof that a sample is uncontaminated. They do not fully reproduce abrasive contact between a drill bit and rock, nor every possible transfer or chemical reaction during drilling. NASA’s contamination strategy discusses flight-like drilling tests in ultraclean Earth testbeds as one way to investigate such gaps.
