Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Android Auto won’t connect, keeps disconnecting, or connects while apps have no internet, first identify which link is failing: the car-display connection or the phone’s mobile-data service. A USB cable can affect wired projection, but it cannot restore cellular coverage. Use the matching steps below, and check phone and vehicle compatibility before changing settings or buying accessories.
Identify what is failing
Android Auto projection and mobile internet are separate. The phone can connect to the car display even when cellular data is unavailable; conversely, mobile data can work while Android Auto fails to start.
- Display connection: Android Auto does not appear on the car screen, or the projection link drops. Note whether you connect by USB or wirelessly.
- Mobile internet: Android Auto appears, but navigation, media, or another online app cannot connect.
Before troubleshooting, note your phone model, car or receiver model, Android version, Android Auto version, country, and when the issue began. Menus and availability vary by phone, vehicle, receiver, and market.
Check compatibility and requirements
The car or stereo must support Android Auto; having a USB port does not establish compatibility. Check the specific phone and vehicle against Google’s compatibility information before buying a cable or other accessory.

Google lists Android 9.0 or later and an active data plan among the requirements for wired car-display use. Wireless use additionally requires a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and a compatible car or stereo. See Google’s Android Auto requirements for current details. Android Auto is integrated into supported phones, so car-display use generally does not require downloading a separate app.
Fix a wired Android Auto connection
- Confirm the car supports Android Auto. Check the vehicle or receiver manual and make sure Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system. Restart the infotainment system if needed. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s site for firmware updates.
- Unlock the phone and follow prompts. Connect it directly to the car’s USB port. If the phone only charges, check its USB notification to see whether it recognizes a data connection. If prompted, select a data-transfer mode; labels vary across Android versions and manufacturers. The Android Auto Team Community FAQ also describes checking the USB connection mode.
- Check the cable and ports. Look for debris or damage in the phone, car, and cable ports, then try a known-good cable that supports data transfer. Google recommends a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre and says not to use a USB hub or extension. A cable supplied with the phone is a reasonable alternative to test if it fits both ports.
- Replace a suspect cable as a diagnostic step. A cable can charge a phone without reliably carrying data. Replacing it may help diagnose a wired failure, but it is not a guaranteed fix. A team community specialist has described defective cables as a common troubleshooting finding, but that post is not a current quantified study.
- Reset the car connection if needed. If the setup used to work, use the phone’s current Android Auto settings to remove or forget previously connected cars, then set up the connection again. Follow the on-screen instructions; setting names vary.
Fix wireless connection or disconnections
- Verify wireless compatibility. Both the phone and the specific car or stereo must support wireless Android Auto. If you are unsure, check with the vehicle maker.
- Pair over Bluetooth for initial setup. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup, and make sure the phone is in range of mobile-data service. Google’s wireless setup instructions explain the requirements.
- Forget and pair again. If the phone and car were previously paired, remove or forget the car on the phone and repeat pairing using the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Exact steps vary by infotainment system.
- Escalate repeated drops. If the connection still drops after compatibility and pairing checks, there is no single universal remedy established in Google’s setup guidance. Record the phone and vehicle models and their software versions, then contact the relevant manufacturer or submit a Google bug report. Do not assume mobile data is the cause of a projection drop.
When Android Auto connects but has no internet
- Check cellular service on the phone. Confirm the phone has signal and an active mobile-data plan. Google’s setup guidance says the phone needs to be in range of mobile-data service.
- Test another phone app in the same place. If other apps also cannot reach the internet over mobile data, the issue is with mobile service rather than the car-display link. Contact your carrier for help; Google’s Android Auto guidance does not establish an APN change, plan change, or carrier-specific setting as a universal fix.
- Isolate a single app. If other apps have mobile data but one app used through Android Auto does not, troubleshoot that app’s connection, account, or settings. A working projection link does not guarantee that every third-party app or service is available.
Capture a bug report for a persistent problem
For a repeatable failure that remains after the relevant checks, Google provides a bug-report process. Google advises capturing the report soon after reproducing the problem and keeping the phone connected to the car while capturing and sending it, because disconnecting may lose relevant information. Follow the current instructions while safely parked; do not interact with reporting controls while driving.
