First work out whether your Samsung T7 is not being detected at all, or whether your computer detects it but cannot open or write to its volume. Check the connection before changing anything on the drive. If the T7 contains files you need, do not format or erase it: reformatting can destroy access to its existing contents.
1. Check whether the T7 is detected or only unavailable
Look for the drive in the computer’s storage tools as well as in Finder or File Explorer. If it appears in a storage tool but not as an openable volume, the host is detecting the device; the file system, volume state, or mount may be the issue. If it does not appear there either, focus first on the physical connection and host compatibility. These clues help narrow the problem, but do not by themselves prove that the drive has failed.
- Not detected: Try a direct connection to a compatible computer port, without a hub or dock if possible. If available, compare with a known-good data cable and another port. These are diagnostic checks, not fixes guaranteed by Samsung.
- Detected but not usable: Check whether the volume is mounted and whether its file system is supported by the operating system. Do not initialize, erase, or format it if the files matter.
- Detected but read-only: If the volume is exFAT and has been used across Mac and Windows, see the write-access steps below before considering a format change.
2. Rule out connection and compatibility problems
Samsung’s Portable SSD T7 manual lists Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X 10.10 or later, and Android Lollipop or later as system requirements. These are the manual’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every port, adapter, or mobile device will support the drive. For a phone or tablet, verify that its port and adapter support external storage and data connections.
The manual specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) for optimal transfer performance. USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps), USB 2.0, and USB 1.1 can limit performance; Samsung also notes that performance may be suboptimal without UASP support, even over USB 3.2 Gen 2. These are performance specifications, not proof that a slower connection causes complete non-detection.

3. Check whether the file system matches your operating system
Samsung says the T7 is pre-formatted as exFAT, which its manual lists as supported by Windows, Mac, and Android. Its compatibility table gives these read/write behaviors for Windows and Mac:

This table describes the behavior in Samsung’s manual; it does not establish universal behavior for every operating-system release, device, or third-party driver. A file-system mismatch can explain why a detected drive is not usable as expected, but it is not the same as evidence of physical failure.

4. Restore write access to an exFAT drive after cross-platform use
Samsung’s manual describes these steps for the specific case where cross-platform use has left an exFAT T7 read-only:
- On Mac: Reconnect the T7, then eject it using the system’s Eject command.
- On Windows: If Windows offers “Scan and fix,” accept it to run Check Disk (CHKDSK). If that prompt was closed, select the drive, open Properties > Tools, and choose Check.
5. Protect your files before changing the format
Formatting changes the file system and can destroy access to the existing contents. It is not a safe first troubleshooting step when files on the T7 matter. If the drive contains important data and is not accessible, stop before formatting or erasing it and seek data-preserving help. Samsung’s manual does not provide a data-recovery guarantee.

Only consider reformatting once you have decided the existing contents are backed up or no longer needed. Choose a format based on the operating systems that must read and write to the drive, using Samsung’s compatibility information above.

If the T7 is properly connected but remains unrecognized, Samsung advises consulting the user manual or its official SSD support resources and contacting an authorized Samsung service center. Samsung’s T7 Series support listing provides manuals, software resources, and specifications; available downloads and service routes can vary by region and change over time. A cable swap, format change, or software download cannot be promised to resolve every failure.
