There is no safe universal node count, drive count or network speed for a distributed object-storage cluster. Size it from the data you must store and protect, the failures you need to survive, and the client performance and recovery times you require. Then validate the design with the actual drives and workload before ordering hardware.
Ceph’s linked /latest hardware pages identify themselves as development-version guidance, not a production bill of materials. Treat the figures below as Ceph-specific starting points and confirm them against the stable release you plan to deploy.
What determines the cluster size?
A capacity figure alone is not enough. A cluster must have room for protected data, growth and recovery, while its compute and network resources handle both application traffic and internal work such as replication, peering and rebalancing. Those internal operations can also use host CPU, RAM and network capacity, as described in the Ceph architecture overview.
Before choosing servers or drives, write down the workload and service targets that determine the design:

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
- Current stored data, expected ingest and growth horizon, retention and deletion behavior.
- Object-size distribution, number of concurrent clients, and whether access is mostly sequential or random.
- Required throughput, IOPS and latency, including peak periods.
- Which simultaneous drive, host, rack or site failures the system must tolerate, and how quickly it must recover.
Without those inputs, no exact server count, drive count, usable capacity, NIC model or switch topology can be responsibly prescribed.
How much raw storage is needed?
Start with the usable data capacity you need after protection, then account for expected growth, free space and recovery headroom. The protection scheme sets the basic storage overhead; it does not account for metadata, uneven data placement, unusable device capacity or operational reserve.
| Ceph protection example | Raw-space factor | What the factor means |
|---|---|---|
| Size-three replication | 3.0× | Three units of raw capacity per unit of user data. |
| 4+2 erasure coding | 1.5× | Six total data-plus-parity units for every four units of user data. |
These factors follow Ceph’s erasure-coded pool guidance. For example, a hypothetical 100 TB of protected user data would require 300 TB raw with size-three replication or 150 TB raw with 4+2 erasure coding, before adding growth, free-space and recovery reserve. This arithmetic is not a complete capacity plan.

Match the protection layout to failure domains
Protection only works as intended if copies or fragments are placed across the failures the design is meant to withstand. For Ceph erasure-coded pools, the documentation says most deployments need at least k+m CRUSH failure domains and notes an advantage to having k+m+1. A 4+2 profile therefore needs at least six such domains, with seven offering an additional placement option. Define whether a domain means a host, rack or another level before treating the capacity calculation as viable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsErasure coding is not a free capacity gain: Ceph warns that it can reduce performance, particularly on HDDs and during recovery. Compare layouts on usable fraction, tolerated failure types, required failure domains, workload performance, recovery time and operational complexity—not capacity overhead alone.
How many storage nodes and drives should you use?
There is no fixed node count independent of capacity and failure objectives. Ceph recommends distributing daemons across hosts and notes that more, smaller nodes can be safer than fewer dense nodes: losing one very large host can leave too much data to recover without reaching the full ratio. Where feasible, run workload services separately from storage daemons so that application demand does not compete with storage work.

Plan drive layout alongside failure placement. Ceph’s development guidance usually uses one OSD per drive, a dedicated device for the operating system, enterprise media for production, and SSDs for monitor databases and metadata/index pools. HDDs can use SSD WAL/DB offload; the guide gives a maximum of five HDD OSDs per SAS/SATA offload SSD or fifteen per modern NVMe offload SSD. These are Ceph- and release-specific recommendations, not universal ratios. See Ceph’s storage-device guidance.
Media choice also affects performance and recovery: HDDs generally cost less per terabyte but provide fewer IOPS per terabyte as drive size grows; SSDs recover faster and suit metadata- or performance-sensitive pools. Benchmark candidate drives with the intended I/O pattern before committing to a large order.

Compute requirements scale with device and daemon count, and can rise with replication, erasure coding, compression and recovery activity. Ceph’s development-version minimum hardware guidance recommends 3 CPU threads per HDD OSD and 6 per NVMe OSD. It describes these as minimum-level guidance before replication, and says production clusters need more; actual thread needs vary by hardware and configuration.

For memory, Ceph’s development-version CPU and memory guidance sets the BlueStore OSD memory target to 4 GiB by default and advises budgeting at least 20% RAM above the sum of OSD targets. That additional memory is not the whole host requirement: include the operating system, monitors, managers, other daemons and services, logs, and headroom for startup, rebalancing and peak load. Size for peak operation rather than a quiet-period average.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is 10 Gb/s enough, and how much network capacity is needed?
Ceph’s development-version network sizing guidance recommends at least 10 Gb/s between storage hosts and between clients and the cluster, 25 Gb/s for substantial workloads, and says 100 Gb/s may suit dense nodes. These are Ceph recommendations, not a guarantee that a link at any one speed will meet a particular workload’s needs.
The storage network carries client reads and writes as well as replication, recovery and other cluster-internal traffic. Estimate both traffic classes, compare per-host drive throughput with NIC capacity, and check that top-of-rack uplinks will not become oversubscribed. Ceph recommends active/active bonded links across separate switches and a separate out-of-band management network.

Include recovery bandwidth in the design
Recovery speed determines how long the cluster remains exposed after a failure. Ceph gives an illustrative example in which replicating 1 TiB takes 3 hours at 1 Gb/s versus 20 minutes at 10 Gb/s. These are link-speed examples, not a recovery-time guarantee for a particular cluster. Ceph also cautions that a second failure before replication finishes can make data unavailable or lost. Test recovery under realistic client load rather than assuming all link capacity is available to background work.
A practical sizing workflow
- Describe the workload. Record stored data, ingest and growth, retention, object sizes, client concurrency, access pattern, peak throughput, IOPS and latency targets.
- Set resilience and recovery objectives. Specify the simultaneous drive, host, rack or site failures to tolerate and the recovery-time objective. Choose replication or an erasure profile only after choosing failure domains.
- Calculate protected raw capacity. Apply the protection factor to the usable-data target, then add growth and free-space/recovery reserve. Treat the result as a floor until metadata, placement skew and device capacity are accounted for.
- Choose host and drive placement. Map OSDs and other daemons across the chosen failure domains; select media and any SSD offload based on the real workload and the software release.
- Sum compute and memory needs. Add per-OSD needs, other services, operating-system requirements and peak/recovery headroom rather than sizing from idle use.
- Engineer both network traffic classes. Model client I/O and internal replication/recovery traffic per host and across uplinks; include redundant paths and management connectivity.
- Benchmark and exercise failure. Measure candidate drives with the intended I/O pattern, then test client performance while recovery or backfill runs. Verify recovery time and fullness behavior after a realistic failure.
Why vendor example configurations are not a bill of materials
Configuration tables are tied to a particular implementation, protection setting and failure-tolerance model. MinIO’s sizing guide illustrates that server counts, parity and read/write server-loss tolerances vary by configuration, but its repository was archived on April 25, 2026. Use that guide as an illustration of configuration-specific trade-offs, not as a current universal recommendation or statement of support policy: MinIO erasure-code sizing guide.
Ceph likewise says, “No two clusters are alike: benchmark before you buy,” on its Hardware Recommendations page. The same page emphasizes that network bandwidth must carry client traffic plus replication and recovery traffic. Its linked /latest hardware pages describe a development version and do not provide a tested configuration for every workload, so verify guidance against the deployed stable release and validate the intended design.
