Use CSS transitions for small, self-contained style changes. Choose a React animation library when you need coordinated enter and exit behavior, gestures, spring physics, interruptible sequences, or orchestration across components. Neither approach is automatically faster: the properties being animated, browser rendering work, and target device matter more than the label “CSS” or “JavaScript.”
There is also a React-native option to consider: React 19.3 documents <ViewTransition> for selected updates in the DOM. Check the support and APIs for the exact React version in your project before choosing an implementation.
How the approaches differ
A CSS transition interpolates a style value when a CSS property changes, often because a class or state changes. It is a natural fit when the effect is local and the styling itself describes the change—for example, changing a button’s color on hover or focus. MDN documents the syntax and behavior in its CSS transitions guide. Motion’s official React guide likewise says a standard CSS transition is lightweight for simple, self-contained effects such as a hover color change (Motion for React).
A JavaScript animation library adds a component-oriented control layer. In Motion for React, for example, animation props and transition settings can express coordinated effects, gestures, layout changes, and exit animations. Its API supports tween, spring, and inertia transition types, with options such as duration, delay, easing, stiffness, damping, mass, keyframe timing, and staggering (Motion transitions). These are Motion-specific capabilities, not a description of every library.

When CSS transitions are the better fit
- The change is small and self-contained. A color shift, border change, or simple state response usually does not need a separate animation dependency.
- The state already maps cleanly to styles. A class or attribute can represent the before and after states, while CSS handles the interpolation.
- You want the simplest project-level solution. CSS avoids adding an animation library and its API and maintenance costs when the effect does not need those capabilities.
Keep the effect focused on the change the user needs to perceive. A transition is not automatically inexpensive just because it is written in CSS; the browser still has to render the properties involved.
When a React animation library is worth using
- Elements enter or leave the interface. React may remove a component as soon as state changes. Motion’s
AnimatePresencesupports exit animation in this situation, letting the departing element animate before it is removed. - Several elements need coordinated timing. Staggering and shared animation controls are useful when a sequence spans multiple components or elements.
- The interaction needs gestures or physical motion. Gesture responses, spring behavior, and inertia are more involved to coordinate with plain state-driven styles.
- Animations must respond to changing input. A library can offer component-level controls and interruptible sequences when the animation needs to adapt as the user interacts.
Motion is one documented option for these needs; React Spring is another React animation library (React Spring). The available evidence does not establish one library as universally best, so compare the current APIs and project fit rather than assuming they are interchangeable or choosing by popularity.

Consider React’s ViewTransition option
React 19.3 documents <ViewTransition> for selected React updates. It can use CSS View Transition Classes or callbacks that animate through the Web Animations API, and the reference says it currently works in the DOM. Read the React 19.3 release article and ViewTransition reference to determine whether the feature covers your use case and is available in your target project. It is a React-specific option, not a reason to assume every React update will animate automatically.
Performance depends on what moves and how
“CSS versus JavaScript” is not a reliable performance verdict on its own. Motion’s performance guide describes browser rendering in terms of layout, paint, and compositing. Animating a height can affect neighboring elements and require additional rendering work; transform and opacity are commonly efficient because they can often be handled through compositing (Motion performance guide). That is vendor guidance, not an independent head-to-head benchmark, and browser behavior varies.

CSS and Web Animations API animations can run off the main thread in some cases. JavaScript-driven animation work runs on the main thread and can be delayed by other work, but a library does not necessarily compute every animation frame in JavaScript: Motion documents a hybrid approach that uses browser APIs where possible and JavaScript fallback for some capabilities. Acceleration depends on browser conditions, so treat it as a progressive enhancement rather than a guarantee.
For demanding effects, test the actual animation in the target app, browsers, and lower-powered devices. Look for layout-affecting changes, missed frames, and whether the effect remains responsive when other work is happening. No independent comparison here establishes a universal frame-rate winner or bundle-size figure.

Make reduced motion part of the design
Support the operating-system or browser preference for reduced motion rather than treating it as a finishing touch. CSS can use the prefers-reduced-motion media feature documented by MDN. Motion documents a preference policy through MotionConfig (MotionConfig). Decide which movement to remove or reduce and preserve the information conveyed by the animation through a non-motion cue where needed.
A practical decision checklist
- Describe the job. If it is one style change between two states, start with CSS. If it involves presence, gesture input, sequencing, or shared choreography, evaluate a library or React’s ViewTransition.
- Check the lifecycle. If React removes an element that must animate out first, choose an approach that explicitly supports exit behavior.
- Inspect the animated properties. Favor efficient properties such as transform and opacity where they suit the effect; be cautious with layout changes that may trigger extra rendering.
- Confirm the project fit. Check the exact React version for ViewTransition support. For a library, weigh its API and maintenance cost against the features the interface actually needs; no bundle-size comparison is established here.
- Test accessibility and performance. Honor reduced-motion preferences and check the result on the devices and browsers your users rely on.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The official documentation supports choosing CSS for simple transitions and considering libraries or React’s ViewTransition for richer control. It does not provide an independent, like-for-like benchmark proving that CSS or a particular React library is always faster, nor a version-specific bundle-size comparison. Avoid treating vendor capability claims as comparative measurements; choose based on the effect, then profile that implementation in its real context.
