For links to a domain the app publisher controls, Android recommends App Links because verified links can open the app directly while still working as web addresses when the app is absent.
What is the difference between an App Link and a custom URL scheme?
Both are types of deep links: they can take a person to specific content in an app. The difference is the address and how Android decides which app should handle it.

How App Links verification works
The app declares HTTP or HTTPS URL patterns in an Android intent filter and sets android:autoVerify="true". The website publishes a Digital Asset Links statement at https://<hostname>/.well-known/assetlinks.json. That statement identifies the app and its signing-certificate fingerprint, allowing Android to verify the association. See Android’s App Links setup and verification guidance.
Declare the exact hosts the app supports and make sure each serves the association file correctly. Android’s troubleshooting guidance warns that redirects—including HTTP-to-HTTPS and non-www-to-www redirects—can cause verification failures. Check the host in the manifest against the host serving the file, then test verification on devices.

What happens when someone taps each kind of link?
Verified App Link
When the URL matches a verified association, Android can route it to the app without asking the user to choose between handlers. The same URL remains a normal website address, so it can take someone without the app to the site’s corresponding content.
Custom URL scheme
A custom URI such as example://products/123 can be registered by an app, but the scheme does not establish that the app owns a related website. If more than one installed app claims the same scheme, link handling can involve a chooser or a default selected by the user. A custom URI also needs a separate plan for people who cannot open it, such as a web link or another fallback.

Which should you use?
- Choose App Links for deep links to pages on a domain your app publisher controls. Android recommends them for this use because the verified website association helps provide a trusted, seamless route into the app.
- Use a custom scheme when an app-specific, non-web URI is needed. Account for possible scheme conflicts and provide a fallback where people may not have the app.
- Use both where appropriate if your product needs web-address links as well as a separate app-specific URI; they serve different routing needs.
Android version and Dynamic App Links
App Links are supported on Android 6 and later devices with Google services. Verification behavior also differs by Android version: on Android 11 and earlier, verification fails if even one declared host cannot be verified; Android 12 and later attempts to verify each host, so a verified host can become the default handler even if another host is not verified.
Android 15 (API level 35) introduced Dynamic App Links on supported devices with Google services. They let a website’s Digital Asset Links configuration refine path, query, fragment, and exclusion behavior without requiring an app release. Server-side rules cannot expand beyond the scope declared in the app manifest. Android 14 and earlier do not apply these advanced server-side rules in the same way, so test routing on the oldest Android versions you support.

Verification is not a substitute for input validation
App Links verification helps prevent other apps from intercepting links to the associated website, but it does not make every incoming URL or parameter safe. The app should validate the URI, parameters, and requested action before using them. Android Studio’s App Links Assistant can help create intent filters, map URLs to activities, and check mappings, but the app must still correctly process incoming intent data.
