Mouse problems in competitive games can come from the mouse or its connection, Windows and the game’s input path, or the CPU, rendering and display stages that turn movement into pixels. A cursor that skips is not the same symptom as aim that feels delayed. Start by checking the device and connection, then see whether the fault follows the mouse to another PC; only after that compare polling and game latency settings.
First identify what the mouse is doing
“Mouse lag” can describe several different experiences. A cursor that jumps or stops tracking points toward the sensor, surface, power or connection. A smooth but delayed response may instead involve game processing, frame rendering, display refresh or synchronization. A fault limited to one game also does not, by itself, show that the mouse is defective.
The full path runs from the physical mouse and its connection through the operating system and game, then through rendering and the display. Delay on screen can arise at more than one stage. NVIDIA describes system latency as the time between an input, such as a click, and its visible result; its materials separate stages including game processing and rendering (NVIDIA Reflex).
Check the mouse, receiver and tracking surface
Begin with simple physical checks before changing game settings. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and hardware, including the cable, battery and sensor (Microsoft Support).

- Confirm the mouse has power, the battery is charged if applicable, and the cable is not loose or damaged.
- Clean the sensor and try a different suitable surface if movement skips in particular spots. Logitech lists sensor placement and surface tuning among possible cursor-tracking factors (Logitech Support).
- If a USB mouse is connected through a hub, test it directly on the PC; also try another USB port. A powered hub should be receiving power.
- For a USB wireless mouse, unplug and reconnect its receiver. Microsoft suggests waiting about 10 seconds before plugging it back in. For a wireless receiver, also test with the mouse closer to it and with fewer obstructions.
- For Bluetooth, use Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting and confirm the mouse remains connected.
These are comparison checks, not guarantees that a particular port, surface or wireless setup is best for every system.
Find out whether the problem follows the mouse
Test the mouse on another PC with its appropriate driver installed. If the same fault persists there after checking power and connection, Microsoft says the device may need replacement. If it works normally on the second PC, focus instead on the original computer, USB setup, drivers, background activity or the game and display path.

Microsoft recommends checking for driver updates through Windows Update or Device Manager, while noting that an update may not be available. Logitech also identifies firmware or polling issues and Windows updates running in the background as possible contributors to erratic cursor movement. A driver update is a check, not proof that an outdated driver caused the symptom.
Use polling rate as a controlled test
Polling rate is how often the computer’s USB host requests a report from the mouse. A higher rate can shorten the interval between reports, but it is only one part of end-to-end response: the game, system load and display still determine what happens afterward. Logitech notes that higher report rates can increase USB traffic and CPU use, which may affect game performance (Logitech: Mouse polling rate).

If the stutter began after you changed the polling setting, compare a lower rate while keeping the game, connection and other settings the same. If the symptom does not change, restore the setting you prefer and continue diagnosis elsewhere. Neither the highest available rate nor a premium mouse specification is a universal fix; NVIDIA’s mouse-selection guidance also treats fit, weight and wireless support as relevant considerations (NVIDIA).
Check game, rendering and display latency
When cursor tracking is smooth but the on-screen response feels late, look beyond the mouse. Frame rate, refresh rate, V-Sync, windowed mode and related rendering choices can affect perceived response. Use an in-game latency indicator where available rather than diagnosing solely by feel. NVIDIA Reflex tools can help measure latency in supported games and configurations, but Reflex Analyzer requires compatible equipment and is not available on every PC or game (NVIDIA Reflex; NVIDIA Reflex measurement information).

Windows also has more than one mouse-input path. Microsoft Learn distinguishes high-resolution raw input from ordinary pointer-movement messages; raw input is not automatically given Windows pointer ballistics (Microsoft Learn: Raw Input; GetRawInputData). This distinction can matter to developers or advanced diagnosis, because software consuming different input paths may behave differently. It is not, on its own, an explanation for a particular player’s lag.

Replacement is reasonable when the mouse continues to fail on another PC after its connection and appropriate driver have been checked. If the mouse works elsewhere, replacing it may leave the actual problem untouched.

Choose a replacement based on reliable connection and receiver placement, supported polling rates, fit and weight, and whether its sensor tracks consistently on your surface. Consider a mouse pad only when testing points to the surface; consider moving or extending receiver placement only when distance or obstruction is implicated. These checks can identify a relevant factor, but they do not establish that a particular accessory or more expensive mouse will improve a given setup.
Quick Recap
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Describe the symptom precisely: tracking skips, delayed response, inconsistent aim, or a fault only in one game.
- Check power, battery, cable, sensor, surface, receiver or Bluetooth connection, and try a different port or direct connection.
- Test the mouse on another PC with its proper driver. Use the result to distinguish a device problem from an issue specific to the original PC or game.
- Check available Windows or device-driver updates and whether background activity, such as an update, coincides with the problem.
- If symptoms followed a polling-rate change, compare a lower rate under otherwise steady conditions.
- If the mouse tracks smoothly but response feels delayed, check in-game latency indicators and supported measurement tools, then investigate rendering and display settings.
